Page B2 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ July 19,2006 Paperweight Gaels battle hard in West Durham tournament Register wins over West Durham and Orillia, but lose to Whitby and Peterborough PICKERING -- The Clarington Double G Gas Paperweight Green Gaels participated in the West Durham Rock Lacrosse tournament, finishing with a pair of wins and two defeats. The players got off to a good start, defeating West Durham 14-0. They continued their winning ways with a strong effort against Orillia, coming out on top 10-1. This set up a match with arch rival Whitby. The Gaels came out of the ■ gate slow, getting down 5-0 by the end of the first period and never recovered, losing by a final score of 14-2. The Gaels last game was against Peterborough and after a tough first period, the Gaels played great lacrosse, : but came out on the short end of a 7-4 score. In a 7-0 win over Newcastle, Connor Stevens with one and Lucas Joel with six goals accounted for the scoring. Emily Gascon had the shutout for Courtice #3. Up against a tough Bowmanville Team #10, Courtice came out with the 5-2 victory. Scoring for Courtice was Lucas Joel with all five goals. Scoring for Bowmanville Were Ross Park and Dela- nee Judd. Outstanding goaltending for Courtice was put in by Emily Gascon. Courtice had an easier time against Newcastle #3, coming out strong from the start and finishing with a bang, outscoring Newcastle by a score of 9-1. Scoring for Courtice were Ben Ramirez with one, Connor Stevens with two, Noah Buckle with two and Lucas Joel with four. Scoring for Newcastle was William Wimkelhorst. The goalies for Courtice put in an excellent effort. The bad news: they dropped a< 9- 5 decision on the road to the Six Nations Chiefs and still trail the Barrie Barrie Lakeshores for third place in the Major Series Lacrosse league by three points. The good news: the Lakeshores also came out of the weekend on a losing note (11-10 to Kitchener-Waterloo), meaning the Redmen didn't lose any ground.
