John had been fishing a couple of times in the past; however, he was 'never able to catch anything. We have fished together these past two weekends, but he was 'hooked' by the end of the first. We went pike fishing and I gave him a spinnerbait to fish with, as this is easy bait to use. John caught about five or six pike and couldn't believe how much fun fishing was when you actually catch something. Last weekend we made the short tip to Lake Simcoe to fish for smallmouth bass. This time, I was teaching John how to fish a tube jig. This particular type Ryan Stubbs of bait can be fairly difficult to fish with if you don't have much fishing experience. After a couple of demonstrations, John tried it for himself. Within five minutes he told me that his line was stuck on the bottom. Right then, the bottom started to move. John realized quickly that he had caught a fish. After fighting the fish for a few minutes, minutes, John landed a five pound smallmouth smallmouth bass. He flashed a big smile and said, "I understand why you like fishing so much!" By the end of the day, our thumbs were in pain because of the number of fish we had taken off of the hook. We probably caught, between 40 and 50 bass. As a result, John agreed to join me again for another fishing trip. Last weekend, the bass were in shallow shallow water. So much so, that we could actually see the bass before we caught them. We would see a school of about 10 to 20 fish and then cast into their general direction. Once one of us hooked a smallmouth bass, the other would cast his line in behind the fish that had just been hooked. Smallmouth bass are known to follow the'fish that is hooked. This can be a very effective tournament tournament tactic as you can turn many single fish into doubleheaders. As an added convenience in this habit, when smallmouth bass are following another hooked smallmouth bass, they become very aggressive and therefore become much easier to catch. . In order to catch the fish, both John and I were at the front of the boat with our eyes pealed for schooling fish with our Shimano spinning rods in hand. A spinning rod is much more effective in this situation as light line in clear water is a must. We both had our reels spooled with 10-pound test fluorocarbon fluorocarbon line so that the fish would not spot the line in the clear water of Lake Erie. After the past two weekends John is now addicted to fishing. If you are a dedicated angler, make a point to take someone fishing this summer and help grow the sport that we love so much. Good luck and tight lines! Ryan Stubbs is a tournament angler and fishing guide who is an expert on fishing in southern Ontario. He can be reached at ryan @fishingpro. ca.
