PAGE B2 The Canadian Statesman November is, 2006 www.durhamrcfiion.cotn 1 ' Back to Q-school for Mills Rookie made just 6 of 27 cuts on PGA Tour DURHAM -- After a disappointing disappointing rookie season on the PGA Tour, Oshawa native Jon Mills has a difficult road ahead to get back there. The 28-year-old former Brook- lin resident will start the journey tomorrow at Panama City Beach, Florida, where he will begin the second stage of PGA qualifying school. Mills cracked on to the PGA Tour this season based on a tremen dous 2005 on the Nationwide Tour, fifth among 20 who earned their cards through that route. But he made only six cuts in 27 PGA events he entered this season, leaving him 227lh on the money list with $65,494 in earnings. Only the top 125 retained then- cards. By going back to Q-school, Mills will be in one of the most gruelling tests that Jon Mills exists in the sport. If he survives the four-round second stage, he will be looking for one of 30 (plus ties) PGA cards available during the final stage, a six-round marathon marathon from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4 at La Quinta, California. All those who reach the final stage are guaranteed at least conditional conditional status on the Nationwide Tour next season. As a 2005 PGA card holder, Mills earned an exemption through the first stage of Q-school. Oshawa's Derek Gillespie entered the first stage, but fell two strokes shy of advancing in Florence, South Carolina. Rounds of 70-72- 70-73 left him five-over-par.
