BOWMANVILLE Monday after Christmas and also after New Year’s Day will be legal holidays, so don’t worry about any bank business far one day more, as one day more grace is sometimes a great help. Now don’t forget the Public School concert in the High School1 Auditor- ium on Monday and Tuesday, Dec- ember 19th and 20th. This is always an interesting occasion and you will miss a fine program if you are not there. We notice there alre some radio owners who have not paid their li- cense for 1938 .which will be a rather costly business for them if they are brought up before the Magistrate. It is dear enough without court action for all the pleasure we get from this service of asusement. We are not in favour of changing Dominion Day and we are not alone in this matter. Dominion Day should be kept, as at filst, on July 1st. July 4th is kept by the United -States people and we briar nothing about changing that day to suit cer- ‘aijn people. ISo why our Dominion Day. Lett, it remain as it is. Our old friend, Mr, Fred Foley, of St. Catharines, Who has been in town for several weeks, returned home last week and his many friends were pleased to see him, 'Fred was always one of the foremost in helping along that what was for the uplift for the good of the community and we cer- tainly miss him from our midst. Our old friend Thomas Pingle had a fine birthday party last month, his 88th birthday, and many friends and relatives were present, Thomas is one of the old guard in the music line and appears in the picture of the . old Letiieratti Club along with a number of the old time furniture factory and organ employees and some citizens of that period. Well here is1 hoping he sees a goodly number of au oh occa- sion!.-; to our old friend and citizen. We notice the price of bread has dropped in town so far as the baker here are concerned. Well, even at 8 cents there should be a fair profit for them at that. Do you remember When it, was 5 cents in this town and eggs 5 cents per dozen and then up to 8 cents for several years, and milk 5 cents per quart, and in that period plenty olf work and no relief, <oord woo'd at $2.00 pe|r cord and slabs for the going after and other things in proportion ? The good old days. iSwriita Glaus came to town Saturday last, and no three ringed circle could have drawn- a greater crowd, of kid- lets and there must have been a won- derful lot of tired mothers with one kid!et in Orono and one or two hanging on and dodging in and out, t0 see the show, but jt was a chil- dren’s show time and they appeared to enjoy themselves, especially the candy gifts. There are some people in this world who appear to take some pleasure in announcing that Santa Glaus iis only a myth, and that chil- dren should be taught slo. Well those sour-faced old antedeluvians should fade away on such am- occasion, and take to the hack .concessions until reason returns. Just the same the children had a great day, so let them enjoy themselves, they will have their share of trouble soon enough. Did Santa Claus bad a wonderful escort into -town on Saturday last, the Legion Band, of we do not know how many members, the fire brigade and inumo.ra'ble Boy Scouts followed by kidlete of a!li sizes and ages. -Santa had bis special reindeer sleigh and snow and ice from the Arctic regions and with his winter garb presented a j-ollly old appearance, what his greet- ing to the youngsters was we could not, get near enough to hear for the dense crowd. Chief of Police Vente» and bjs aid kept the sitfr-eet clear of traffic for a, time but bad to route motorists up CMirch street for a time until the crowd became less in num- bers. The Christmas tree was put up in Mr. Ch a Ills’ yard amd decorat- ed with electric bulbe and was a very fine one, and evergreens were dis- tributed the length of the. business' section of King St. and now with no old telegraph poles to mar the scene King street is a different gpecimoo front the old days, à wonderful im- provement' to the old rhurougMa.ro. The band concert on Sunday even,1- ing in, tlhe Royal Theatre drew a crowd that filled the building and many wfvre unable to even .have a look in and went hom-e -to wait for the next, one. The programme was'prin- cipally bamd selections. Mr. Demp- sey, of Oshawa, conducted the band. Several musicians were present from tile motor town and assisted the lo- cal members, including those from Orono. Those who. book part were the young men’s vocal quartette from St, Paul's Church, Miss Naylor of St. John’s Anglican Church, Mr. Sam Castile of Sit. Paul’s Choir and Messrs, George Rowe and Donald Hamm in a carnet duet, with Mrs. Lynch at the piano. The Rieeve of the town, Mr. Mo-rris, Was the chairman. A feature o'f the program was- the vocal duet by MS* Naylor and Mr. Castle and the comet duet, especially the Classified COMING EVENTS Antioch Christmas Tree and Con- cert, Tuesday, Ddeemibecr 20th,.
