Asks $10,000 grant for Orono arena E.R. Lovekin on behalf of the Durham Centreal Agriculture Agriculture Society has petitioned for a grant in the amount of $10,000.00. In his letter Mr. Lovekin makes note that they had received correspondence from the Region asking them if they wished to make claim for a grant. The writer asked that consideration be given to the grant because the maintenance maintenance and renovation of the building, used as an arena, for recreational purposes had to be faced realistically. He felt that a factual probe into the recreational function of the arena building would justify the request. RECOMMENDS COUNCIL TAKE OVER LANDS E.R. Lovekin in a letter to the chairman of the Newcastle Newcastle Village Lion Swimming Pool committee and with a copy to council recommends that land to be purchased from Mr. Harry Jose of Newcastle for the erection of a swimming pooT be transferred transferred directly to the Municipality Municipality of the Town of Newcastle. Mr. Lovekin states that any other means of transfer becomes almost impossible under the existing conditions and felt with municipal ownership ownership many of the difficulties could be eliminated. Offer $5,000 reward The Region Police of Durham Durham have offered a reward of $5000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a person or persons in connections with the murder of Beverly Lynn Smith, 22 of Raglan on December 9th, 1974. „ The young housewife was found lying face-down in her living room with the back of her skull pierced with a .22 calibre bullet. Miss Diane Dineen, B.A., M.L.S. New head librarian for the Newcastle Public Library system paid her first visit to the Orono Library on Thursday Thursday of last week. Miss Dineen has been hired by the Town of Newcastle Board to co-ordinate co-ordinate the library system in the Town which will include the three branches in Bowman- ville, Newcastle Village and Orono. Miss Dineen comes to Newcastle from the Windsor Library system where she was in charge of a branch library. Prior to her employment employment in Windsor she had been a school librarian and a librarian at the University of Guelph, She has, in the past, be active in children's work associated with the libraries. The success success of the show has warranted warranted a third Jamboree with the tentative date of Sunday, February 9th, again to be held in the Orono Town "Hall. A feature of the Jamboree on Sunday was the first appearance of the Blue Grass Trio with their special blue grass and gospel music. The trio had Reg Post on Banjo, Shorty Miller, mandolin and Rod Craig playing the fiddle. The group were a hit of the show with some fast moving music such as 'Turkey in the Straw.' These students have taken up residence at the Pines Senior Elementary School. NEW TILE FLOOR-During the holiday recess a new tile floor was installed in the gym at the Orono Public School. The principal states that it is only running shoes now. No scuff marks from hard shoes wanted or sock feet. The first steps were taken by regional council Tuesday to reduce the potentially dangerous level Of nitrate in wells within the former Village Village of Newcastle following a ministry of environment recommendation. recommendation. A recommendation will be forwarded to regional council requiring all buildings within the former village be connected connected to the sanitary sewer system. High levels of nitrate have been found in water from Newcastle wells according to a staff report from Bob Richardson, works commissioner. commissioner. His report is based on. studies carried out by the ministry of the environment. "In order to protect the ground water supply in Newcastle, Newcastle, it will be necessary to eliminate the major sources of nitrate nitrogen which are in the septic systems," stated the report. Prolonged consumption of drinking water with a high nitrate content can cause methemoglobinemia in infants, which Mr. Richardson Richardson explained affects "blue babies," or those born with defective hearts. So far, no cases have been reported.
