Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 9th, 1975 Drummond honored at Oshawa reception A resident of Orono for the past fifty years, Arthur A. Drummond, was honoured on Sunday at a reception in the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, in recognition of his work as an artist and in conjunction conjunction with an art show of his work now on display at the gallery. The reception was well attended by residents of the area who have admired Mr. Drummond as a gentleman gentleman and an artist. Mayor G. B. Rickard in officially opening the art exhibit on Sunday praised Mr. Drummond as a husband, father, business man and one who has also, found time in his busy life to express his feelings of nature so admirably admirably on canvas. He afso spoke of the gaining prominence of the arts in society and congratulated the gallery of their interest in those within the region. Special words of praise were . afforded by Mayor Rickard to, Mrs. Margot Samuel, who had organized the assembled showing on behalf of the gallery. Mrs. Joan Murray, director of the gallery also spoke at the official opening welcoming everyone to the gallery and stating how pleased they were to be able to have on display the works of Mr. Drummond. The exhibition of art covered covered some 63 years during the painting career of Mr. Drummond Drummond and included in the show are 55 individual works by the artist. Most of the paintings are in water-colour but some early oils are included indicating the breadth breadth of the painter's experience. experience. The display covers the major portion of the spacious art gallery and will be on display in Oshawa until May llth. On May 13th some twenty pictures of the show will be brought to the Orono Library for a two week showing and later to the Bdwmanville Library. The exhibit is well worth a trip to the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in- Oshawa and even though it may be coming to Orono it will not then exist to the extent that it now appears at the gallery. Mrs. W. Stapleton wins $100.00 draw The Orono Amateur Athletic Athletic Association held their annual benefit banquet and draw on Saturday evening of last week with 205 tickets being sold for the event at $6.00 each. The banquet is held in order to help defray cost of the operation of the cnn and the sponsorship of -.ports in the community by the Association. The Banquet held in the basement of the Orono United Church was catered to by the Orono Figure Skating club who also make use of their catering fees for their operation. Following the banquet the group moved to the Oddfellow's Oddfellow's Hall for the eleimination draw. Mrs. Gail Stapleton of Orono was the $100.00 winner while Gerry Duvall was in the contest until the second last Continued page 2 Pilot project bogs down A proposed pilot project to improve stream conditions and wildlife habitat on a stream running into the Orono Creek by the Ganaraska became bogged down due to the lack of experienced help to plan the project. Last year thé project was in a proposal stage with some spring planting planting intended for 1975. Mr, Bob Hodgins of the Authority stated that to ensure ensure success of the program more detailed planning and soil conditions for planting should be carried out prior to planting. It is now the intention of the Authority to have the planning carried out . during the year and ready for planting in the spring of 1976. The stream under consideration consideration runs east of the Village of Orono through the hollow at the south of the Village and to the Orono stream. Appea ls to council John Liptay of Bowmanville again approached council of the Town of Newcastle on Monday requesting that council council rescind a recommendation of the Public Works Committee Committee setting forth requirements for road improvements to MAple Street in the hamlet of Haydon. Mr. Liptay has received a severance from lands owned by his brother which fronts on Maple Street on which he desires to build a home. Cowboy clown, John Noonan Noonan from Roseneath joined with singing truck driver Larry Adams, (shown above) in what proved to be a most entertaining and humorous feature of the day. Day nursery rates go up Parents who have children enrolled at Rossland Park Day Nursery will be paying higher attendance fees for them, on June 1. The request for the hike in rates by the nursery was approved by " the regional social services committee Thursday. The new rates will be increased to $7.00 per day, $4.50 for a half day with lunch provided to the child and $4.00 for a half day without lunch. Doug Johns, regional commissioner commissioner of the social service department, who recommended recommended the committee approve these higher fees, said that even with the new rates, the region couldn't operate similar day care centre. To open Rice Lake wilderness picnicing The Ganaraska Conservation Conservation Authority is to open the Rice Lake Conservation Area this year on a limited use basis. The area, some 90 acres, is located along the south shore of Rice Lake, north-east of the County Road junction and Highway 28, south of BeWdley. The Conservation Conservation area has some frontage on the lake and is quite scenic with wooded sections and rolling terrain. The Authority gave approval approval to have a small grass parking lot prepared along old County Road 9, just east of Highway 28. The area is being called a wilderness picnic area. It will require at least a half mile walk through fields and bush area to reach the proposed picnic area. The area was purchased some three years ago with the proposal that it be turned into a camping and picnic development. development. The Orono Hockey Mothers held . their annual meeting April 1st with approximately 30 mothers present. The Hockey Mothers have had a busy season. The penny sale in the fall, ordering hockey coats, the snack booth at the Street Fair, the N.H.L. Hockey Draw, and having a Hockey Mother to take admission admission at the Arena" door each weekend, Many thanks to the past executive members members and all mothers who helped throughout the season. The Hockey Mothers donated donated $1300.00 to the Athletic Association during the season. season. THIS AN IMPROVEMENT During the past spring-like weather children going to school from the Orono Estates have had to wade through mud on the open lot to gain access to Orono Mill Street. Coun. Kirk Entwisle informs us that the owner Of the lot has given approval for planks to laid through the lot to eliminate this problem. He points out that it took the co-operation of the. owner due to the fact that the Town can not move onto private property. It was pointed out by the councillor that the Town of Newcastle is negotiating to gain ownership of the lot. BIRDS HARD HIT BY WEATHER CONDITIONS We have had a report that the rigors of the weather over the past week has played havoc with the smaller birds as well as robin who now expect some warmer conditions. Birds are being found dead suffering from exposure. It would certainly help to put out some feed for them under these conditions. PARKING ENFORCEMENT IN ORONO The Town of Newcastle received a report from the clerk that the Parking Enforcement officer could make periodic checks in Newcastle and Orono and that although he did not have transportation it will be provided through the co-op'eration of the Recreation Department who are out in the area quite frequently. The report also stated that Mr. Doug. Simpson still held the records of the former Police Village and that these should be turned over to the Town of Newcastle. AN EXTRA-BONUS Snowmobilers, cross country skiers and down-hill skiers were presented with an extra bonus over the week-end with an abundance of snow for their particular sport. Conditions were good at the Oshawa Ski Club especially on Sunday and those passing that way found more snow along the side of the county road than 'they have all year. PUBLIC MEETING A public meeting with the Community Services Committee will be held on April 15th, 1975 at the Town Hall, Orono, at 8 p m. to discuss the possibilities of a new arena. Everyone welcome. The meeting is being sponsored by the Orono- Hockey Mothers and follows a discussion held at their annual meeting. ALL ROADS OPEN In speaking with Mr. Dunham, Director of Public Works for the Town of Newcastle on Mondav he stated that all roads in the Town were now open following the three day. storm. He said that one of the big dangers of the present time would be the possibility of a fast run off if the snow was Xo melt in a hurray which is quite likely at this time of year.
