These activities have touched many phases of community life and on Monday evening their senior citizens party was but another indication of this activity and awareness of community needs. The evening could only be a joy for those in attendance and rewarding for the sponsors. It was stated that for one or two it was the first time in nine months that they had been out in public. To the Kinsmen and Itinettes appreciation is expressed for their concern and thoughtfulness. A MUNICIPAL RESPONSIBILITY Last week a group of parents from the Orono area let it be known that they want a new community centre complex in Orono with arena and a suitable community room housed in the same building. It was stated at the meeting they were willing to direct the project themselves, bear a large portion of the total costs of $419,000.00 and wanted to control the complex when completed. It's a tall order financially and more than likely impossible. Further the principle is not now in accord with the existing precedent set by the Town of Newcastle to construct arenas with public funds. Financially any local group would have interest charges, amounting possibly upwards of $30,000 annually, principle payments amounting a least to $10,000 and on top of this the operating costs of perhaps a further $15,000 to $20,000. Let it further be considered that any local group would want some 40 hours of prime time for their own ùse for local skaters and hockey players. The figures add up to impossible. It would also be a fac t that while paying off the Orono arena the local group would also through their taxes be assisting in ipaying off debentùre costs of such as the Darlington Sports Centre, and possibly in the future another ice pad in Bowmanville or Courtice. Thé responsibility of arenas is a municipal responsibility, where costs are distributed over the whole town with benefit iOf commercial and industrial assessment. Although taxes keep mounting, the cost Of arenas through taxes should not become a great burden to any one group. Some criticism was directed towards the Town of Newcastle council last week but this is unfounded at this time. The Town in recreation has extended its services into this community. Let it also be considered that the Town has only been in existance for fifteen months and surely cannot be expected to catch up on all segments of the community that have lagged behind in the past. It is a well known fact that the former Township of Clarke was not a great supporter of recreational facilities. From this corner the only hope for a new arena rests solely with the municipality. Officially they have never been approached and as such can hardly be faulted at this time. It would seem logical that the locals make an official request to council along with submitting their plans for the arena complex asking it to be included in the capital budget for 1976. Enough cannot be said for the work of the Orono Athletic Association since its inception in the early 1940s, the Orono Skating Club from its early days and the more recently formed Orono Hockey Mothers. There will always be a need for these organizations but due to changing conditions and rising costs their role may not be as directed to the operation and financing of an arena. The municipality on the other hand has established itself inthis role and should expand this service throughout the entire community. There should be no fear from a municipality operated arena in this community. Orono Weekly Times Editor I am trying to raise a family to grow up to be a credit to society. Unfortunately it's getting harder all the time. I find that most children to-day have to much money and to to much spare time away from home. These children are spoiled brats, with parents who are afraid to say NO. I believe that some parents don't care where their kids are as long as they don't have to look after them all the time, or be checking up on them. This applies to kids of all ages. I love my kids very much and I want what's best for them, this most certainly is not for them to grow up to be an alchoholic or drug addict. Both of these things are pretty easy to come by. Older kids that are considered old enough enough to handle liquor buy it for the ones that are not old enough. To my way of thinking these kids are just that KIDS. They are not mature enough to handle alchohol let alone be buying and drinking it. Drugs are just as easy to obtain, These things have got to stop. What is wrong with this dâmn society when these kids can go to a ffigh School dance and get both these things or bring them with them. Not only that but the Police Highway 35 and 115, just north of Newcastle featuring: Premium Quality Products At the Most Reasonable Prices 1 * 1 ** 1 1 ■ I I Available in any quantity I Phone 9874215 g Stove OH & Diesel Oil ( which we are paying with our taxes) are not allowed to go in the school to try and stop these kids. This should be changed. The Police should be able to check these dances and get these kids before they reach the innocent ones and the ones that are easily led. Do you want your child to be an alchoholic or junkie? Well if you don't you'd better start to-day to take the responsibility that is yours and has been yours since the day the child was born.
