Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 30th, 1975 250 attend Orono Lodge Centennial A momentous occasion was observed on Saturday evening evening when the Orono Lodge, A.F, & A.M, celebrated their one hundredth ânniyersay. Two hundred and fifty attended attended a Centennial Dinner and Commemoration ceremony at Clarke High School. Visitors were present from as far away as Windsor and all fifteen Masters of the local district were present. The Orono Lodge is the eleventh Lodge in Ontario District to attain the 100th anniversary. One hundred years ago eight members of Durham Lodge, Newcastle, banded to gether to form the Orono Lodge which was given a charter in July of 1875, From this point in its history it has grown to its present day status within the community promoting service both to the Craft and the community. Chairman for the evening was Wor. Bro. Wayne Bailey who called on Rev. Bro. Basil Long for Grace and Toast to the Queen and Craft. Wor. Bro. Bailey also introduced the lead table quests. Ht. Wor. Bro. Donald Fear, Parkwood Lodge and District Deputy Grand Master of Ontario District introduced the Worshipful Masters of the District, The introduction of the Orono Lodge Officers was by Wor. Master Bro. Darrel Devolin. Bro, Tom Henderson proposed proposed the toast to the Most Wor. Bro. George Turner, Grand Master, the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario. A presentation presentation was also made to the Grand Master by Rt. Wor, Bro. H Duvall. The toast to the visitors was proposed by Wor. Bro. Klaas Schoenmaker with response by Wor. Bro, Wilbur Dickinson, Dickinson, P.M. of Ontario Lodge. Rt. Wor. Bro. Alex Hendry, P.D.D.G.M. of Ontario District District presented the Orono Lodge with a plaque in commemoration of the centennial, centennial, Response to the toast and presentation was made by Wor. Ralph Louis Hills of Enniskillen, Enniskillen, will be part of the event which officially recognizes the candidates have completed completed the requirements of the United Church of Canada for ordination into the ministry. Education tax up in Clarke 20 percent Plan special day at Clarke Library The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Education gave approval to their budget last Thursday evening in a total amount of $27,677,243 which is an increase of over $4 million from that of 1974. Of the total budget local taxpay- coritributed $2,347,882 towards the operation of the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board Board of Education. R. 1, Orono, as Registrar beginning May 1st. Miss Layng has a 4 year Honours B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Toronto, majoring majoring in the study of ancient art. She has had one year graduate graduate work at the University for an M. A. in Fine Arts. She won Orono area visited the Lodge, province through grants paying paying the remainder. In the Town of Newcastle the rate is again area rated by the local tax office using the equalizent factor and ( Continued on page 8 ) The Clarke Library and the Clarke Museum, both in Orono, have co-ordinated plans plans to hold a reception honouring honouring Mr, A. A. Drummond on Sunday, May 25th. It will be held at the library where Mr. Drummond's paintings will be on view for a two week period The reception will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. making use of the building and the spacious lawns surrounding the library. The reception will be in the form of a garden party and many local organizations are assisting with the events of the Pearl McCarthy Scholarship Scholarship and the Sidney Key Memorial Scholarship in Fine Arts in 1969. Miss Layng has worked at the Robt. Simpson Co. in the dress and bridal department, mainly the latter. Her great interest in various hand crafts has recently centered on developing her own designs in sewing and needlepoint. Miss Layng has been work- ( Continued on page 8 ) Two candidates declare for liberals A young Bobby Hull or Bobby Orr winds up to take part in the hockey shooting game at the recent Fun Fair held at the Orono Public School. He was finding it difficult to keep his eye on the puck and the target at the same time. On Monday of this week two candidates declared their intention intention to seek the liberal nomination for the new riding of Durham East. Those declaring declaring their position were Mr. Kirk Entwisle of Newtonville and Mr. John Liptay of Bowmanville. It has also been announced that a founding and nomination nomination meeting will be held on May 7th in the M. J. Hobbs Senior Public School in Hampton, Hampton, At this meeting the new ' riding association will, be founded and election of officers officers held. Following this portion of the meeting new association association will then hold its nomination nomination meeting. Those holding current membership membership in any of the existing riding associations will be eligible to vote off the floor at the nomination meeting meeting regarding the election of a candidate. - Memberships in the new association will also be available prior to the May 7th meeting in at least three locations in the area. To be eligible to vote with a new membership it must have been obtained 72 hours prior to the meeting date. In the past the Durham liberal association chose their candidates by delegates from the various polls voting, 'this KIRK ENTWISLE the afternoon. A large tent is to be erected on the grounds where the Rebekah Lodge Members will provide and serve cookies, cakes, coffee and lemonade. Musical selections will be provided during the afternoon by the Country Four Quartette Quartette and the 40 piece Concordia Pops Concert Orchestra from Oshawa. The Museum is preparing a special setting with their antique barbers chair for the quartette while a stage is to be erected for the orchestra. The Pine Ridge Rinettes are also assisting as well as the fire department and some antique car owners. Miss Patsy Reid will delight some of the crowd attending with a ride in:a horse drawn surrey. The main feature of the day will be the artist and his paintings which will hang in the library through the courtesy courtesy of the loaners, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa and Mrs. Margot Samuel. The Clarke Museum will also be open to the public when the 1975 theme will be given its debut. Everyone is invited to be present on this occasion and to pay tribute to Mr. Drummond Drummond and join in the activities of the afternoon. ijappentngsL. r i MYSTERY OF FOOT SOLVED The Ontario Provincial Police Tuesday morning stated that the decomposed foot that had been found just off Highway 115 in the Enterprise area last week was that of a traffic accident victim during 1974. TRULY THE LAST OF THE SEASON The Recreation Department for the Town of Newcastle is holding its last Orono Jamboree show of the season this Sunday afternoon commencing at 2.00 p.m. in the Orono Town Hall. Fay Adams and his group will play special selections and be the back-up band for the numerous other guests to appear on the show. The Orono Jamboree has been a great success this season and has had great support from the general public. DON'T FORGET THE BLOOD CLINIC The Red Cross is holding its regular blood clinic in the Bowmanville Lions Centre on Wednesday, May 7th. Mark the date on your calendar. ■
