Stewart and Mrs, G- Cathcart helped with the service. They enjoyed taking part in the hymn singing. Mrs. Wood asked if anyone had a favourite hymn they would like her to play. Mr. George Pollard said if she would play "In the Garden" he thought he could remember it all (he is blind). So he sang it all through. He is a fine singer. Reve. G. Montgomery sang "There were ninety and nine." One lady told me she was from Colborne and had sung in the choir all her life. She used to play the piano but since her stroke could not turn the pages of the hymn book. The Women's Institute calendar had a sketch of Kendal on the January page, in fact a drawing of the old hotel in Kendal. This was done by Mrs. M. Remington of Orono. February's picture was of the C.R.R. Train 163 on the Forks of the Credit in 1890. March had a picture of the Quaker Meeting House built in 1812 in Newmarket. April calendar was a picture of Laskay Store taken in 1900. Laskay is tow miles west of King City. Let me tell you a story of a family that came to Laskay in 1912 from London, England. I shall call the woman Mrs. Turner. The butcher's wife heard that a new family had come to a farm house south of the village. The man was to work for the farmer. She went down to see them. It was April and raining. She found Mrs. Turner sitting in the centre of the kitchen with all the children around her. She was sitting in the only dry spot. The rain was pouring down . through the leaky roof and she was in tears. The butcher's wife introduced herself. Mrs. Turner said she was anxious to get some meat to make a stew for the children. She said they were not allowed to use the water in the well as that was needed for the farmer's stock. They must carry all their water from the creek which was quite a distance away, The butcher's wife said, "You do not need to put up with these conditions, there are other farmers needing a hired man in April. If your husband would come up Monday morning and go around with the butcher as he visits the farmers to buy cattle he'll get work with some of them." He g'ot work and the family moved into a house in Laskay. The same butcher told Mrs. Turner later that she should get a cow then shè would have milk and butter for her seven children. "Very well," she said, "you buy me a cow." He bought the cow one afternoon and she sat down to milk it. That was the hardest work she had ever done in her life. She thought he'll have to take it away. In the morning the cow was to milk again and the butcher had left before daylight daylight for the city so she had to milk that cow again. It milked a lot easier in the morning. At night it was easier still. So she kept the cow and later got another cow. They ate grass along the road sides and she made butter and sold it. The family did well and today they own their own farm. Speaking of village cows. Each family in Kendal owned a cow before the cars became plentiful and they wandered the roads of the country side. Mrs, T, Hilditch said that when she came to Kendal she went over to the church one night to hear a speaker. Coming home it was as dark as pitch and she fell over a cow. Quite a contrast to our present new street lighting in Kendal. Mr. R. Brennan is in Wellesley Hospital following an operation on his back. He will be there for a long time, Mrs. A. Swarbrick is a patient in Bowmanville Hospital. Hospital. Blood is life pass it on- The Canadian Red Cross has been in the life insurance business for 28 years. They have a unique programme in which everybody can participate, participate, everybody can be a beneficiary. The premium you pay is small. It's just one unit of your good red blood, and you won't even miss it. YoUr body will replace it within 24 hours. By giving it, you will have insured the life of someone who needs blood, someone who might die without it. Somebody that someone could be you. or someone you love. If you should need blood, it will be given to you. That's* one of the special things about the Red Cross insurance programme. You can collect even if you haven't paid the premium. But somebody has to pay it. Just look at the facts for a minute. Every day in Canada, an average of one unit of blood must be collected every 15 seconds of every working day to meet the needs of hospitals coast-to-coast. During holiday periods, when the accident rate rises, even more blood is required. It has to come from somewhere. So far, science has not managed to produce it synthetically. It is, the stuff that life is made of, and it remains a natural miracle. j Your body produces it and j only you can give vour blood. ' Orono Weekly Times.
