Illlllllilil :à|||ïp||| iingiai ilisii: Mcllveen receives PC nomination Dr. Charles Mcllveen, Osh- awa MPP received the Durham Durham East Progressive Conservative Conservative nomination last Thursday at a meeting in the Bowmanville High School by acclamation. Some three hundred were in attendance at the meeting. Dr. Mcllveen said he was sorry that Ren Lyall had not held out to run in the nomination. He also said he had contacted Mayor Rickard to encourage him also to run and contended that we do live in a demoncratic society. In speaking to the audience he outlined a number of areas in which he and the provincial government had been active in the area. He outlined the iiumoeruus improvements made by _ the government concerning Highways 115-35, on a section of highway that had become to be known as the "Death-Strip". He pointed out that the ministry had lowered the speed limit oh this section of highway and Spent $45,000 for signing and j extending and developing additional lands such at the Clarke High School. He also said there is a program to be carried out with lighting for a number of sections of the highway. He also referred to the proposed closing of two intersections onto Highway 115 ip the Orono area. "I have worked with Alex Carruthers and te ministry in these matters," said Dr. Mcllveen. At this point the Doctor praised the work of Mr. Carruthers stating that he was one of the finest men he had had the opportunity to work with in the legislature. Dr. Mcllveen has been parliamentary assistant to the Ministry of Transportation Transportation anu communication anu as such has worked closely with Alex Carruthers ir. matters relating to highway To hold beef barbecue The directors of the Orono Chamber met on Thursday evening when it was decided that the Chamber would hold the annual Beef Barbecue at the Orono Park as in 1974. The : barbecue is to be held on Wednesday, August 20th with Stirling Mather in charge of the event. As in 1974 the Chamber is hopeful of working in conjunction conjunction with the Recreation Department of the Town of Newcastle in regards the annual event. Two killed An Ottawa couple, returning returning trom the Rolling Stones concert in Toronto early' today, were killed in a head-on collision on Hwy 1)5-35 two. miles north of here. Dead are Lome T. Hutcheson Hutcheson 20, of 20 Westmount Ave., Ottawa and Carole L. Tiathur- st, 1.9, of 1381 Raven Ave., Ottawa. Both Were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which occurred at 12:20 a.m. OPP at Newcastle reported last week. Driver of the second vehicle Charles F. Woolacott 34, of Ville Brossard, Quebec is in stable condition at Oshawa General Hospital today. According to police the Hutcheson vehicle was northbound northbound on the highway anc^ trying to pass a slower vehicle when it collided with a south bound car. Both cars were write-offs stiid police. The accident was investigated investigated by Consts. David Cook and Jim Schultz.- Council awaits Thompson Doug Simpson chamber president Last Tuesday evening the Orono Chamber of Commerce held their belated annual meeting for 1975. The meeting was held at the Coach and Four Restaurant with some -fifteen present; r t* The meeting accepted the recommendation, of the nominating nominating committee with the following being elected to office : Past President, Ray Lycett President, Doug Simpson Vice-President, Bob Hazelden den Secretary, Sue Sawyer Treasurer, Clare Gunter Directors elected were, W. H. Carman, Chas. Pearce, Peter Williams. Ron Reed. H. E." Millson and Albert Mun- neke. The new president, Doug Simpson, in speaking following following his election, stated that it was an honour & a responsibility responsibility to hold the office of president of the Chamber. He stated that there was no reason they should not have •m active year and spoke of tne importance of the Chamber. Chamber. On a number df occasions throughout the meeting the president in referring to regional government said that the regional system should work and that the people in general had to think regional themselves. Mr. Clare Gunter, treasurer gave the financial report of the chamber noting that the Chamber had a financial balance of $1861.20 as of the I end of 1974. The Chamber also has a sum of $2000.00 in a bank term deposit. The treasurer stated that the chamber had made a profit of over $600.00 at the barbecue in 1974, this being the largest profit on the affair since the first one which was held by the Orono Park Board in 1967. The Chamber is to hold monthly meeting for the genral membership which is a change from the past few years. Yearly membership has been set at $10.00. reply Last iviunday Planning Consultant Consultant George Howden informed informed council that they were awaiting a reply from Mr. Dennis Thompson regarding the rezoning of his lands from agriculture to residential. COuncil has already approved the application subject to some improvements to the existing residential building that Mr. Thompson has built on the property. Council on Monday voted to take no further action until the final outcome of the U.S. SCOUTS COME TO ORONO A group of U.S. Scouts came to the area over the week-end with a number being billeted in Orono homes. They took part in an exercise in an open field west of St. Mary's Cement plant in Bowmanville HAMILTON TOWNSHIP FAVOURS 4-WAY Flaw Hamilton Township now favours the amalgamation of Port Hope, Cobourg, Hope and Hamilton Townships as a unit in the re-organized Northumberland county. The new area would have a poplation of 30,000 people at the present time. SOLD OUT IN ONE HOUR Twenty-eight housing units went on sale a week ago in Port Hope and within fifty minutes all were sold. The condominiums sold from $21,000 to $25,990 for a four- bedroom unit. It was a melee said the salesman who was expecting to have the homes on display for a two-day period. POLICE VILLAGE DISSOLVED The Police Village of Bewdley will be dissolved as of the end of the £ear. Hamilton Township last week gave three readings to a by-law dissolving the Police Village. The majority of residents in the Village approved the move to save on taxes. Orono prior to the formation of regional government was a Police Village.
