Fortunately, we . cleatied our stove pipes on the last Saturday in January for we haven't had any mild weather since. We often have a thaw around Valentine's Day. Each day gets a "rooster step" longer. On Sunday morning some of our congregation managed to get to church in spite of blustery weather and poor road conditions. Mrs. A. Foster was back from California California and playing the Hammond Hammond organ; Rev. A. Tizzard told the children an interesting interesting story of the squid. He had one in a bottle to show them.- On Sunday Rev. A. Tizzard had reached the last book of the old testament, the book of ■ Mala chi. Some think that the word Malachi means messenger messenger of God. We think of another messenger John the' Baptizer. The people at this time were relaxing, the temple had been rebuilt. Now they were falling away from the true God. Malachi tells them in verse seven of chapter three, "If you are willing to come back to God, He will return to you". In verse seventeen, "They will be mine when I make up my jewels". You and I are messengers of God. Our message is greater than Malachi because we know the Messiah came. Luke tells us that Jesus joined the two followers on the Emmaus road, and those two became messangers to tell the disciples disciples the good news. Peter gave the message at Pente cost and 3,000 joined the church. In verse 17 of chapter - three, "And.'they shall be mine in that day when 1 make up my jewels". May we be - one of those jewels. Mr. and Mrs. A. Munro are spending this week vacationing vacationing on the Bahama Islands. Our pioneer history is most interesting. In the book, "The Pioneers of old Ontario", I read: Mr. H.L. Powers was born in the state of New York but early in life settled near Brockville, removing in 1832 .to what was then the wilderness wilderness of Clarke. "Our family had one team of horses and one yoke of oxen when they started from Brockville and nine days were spent on the journey to where the village of Orono now stands," said Mr, Powers. They were obliged to cross the Trent River and narrowly escaped drowning in doing so. On the last stage of the journey they had to cut a road for four miles through the woods in order to reach the future site of Kirby. The only settlers in the neighbourhood at the time were two families ôf Baldwins and an old bachelor named Eldad Johns. A bear was treed and shot the day the Powers arrive,d A bear was treed and shot the day the Powers arrived, and Mr, Powers' first night was passed in the lee of a fallen pine with the boughs forming a roof. The first Christmas Day was spent in packing flour from Munro's Mill near Newcastle to their home at Kirby. Mr. Powers, his father and two brothers each carried a load home on his buçk. F.R.
