K-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 7th, 1979 Kendal News Spring comes, round again each year - • Kissing the sleeping: world awake With eyes to see and ears to hear Beauty and joy are ours to • take. David Hope. It was the coldest February ever, in a great many places in Ontario. The average temperature was -15.8 Cel- cius. So we are happy that March came in like a lamb with the lovely spring like weather and rain on Sunday to take down some of the banks of snow along the sixth line. Miss Catherine Stewart's birthday was on March 1st. Mrs. M. Stevens, Mrs. 'F. Porteous and Mrs. E. Foster were three of the ladies who • helped her celebrate. Several of the neighbours dropped in for a chat with her during the week. On Friday, March 2 was the World Day of Prayer, A verÿ inspiring service was held in the Kendal church when guests from Shiloh and New* tonville attended. Mrs. M. Stevens acted as chairlady. Mrs. K. Wood was organist. Mrs. Stevens told the life story of an Egyptian baby that grew up to be a famous American doctor saving the lives of many mothers. Mrs. A. Tizzard sang a beautiful solo. A social time was enjoyed following the service. Sunday morning dawned with rain and dense fog so the church attendance was smaller smaller than usual. However there was a lot of children came to Sunday School. Rev. A. Tizzard Tizzard read St. Matthew 26: 36-56. Choosing as his subject .- Judas - one of the twelve. When Judas was born his parents gave him a beautiful name - Praised of God. Whÿ did Jesus call Judas? Perhaps Perhaps we might ask: why didy he call you and me? Because he knew whht the grace of God can do. His grace is' sufficient to make us whole. Judas sold Jesus for the price of a ^lave, thirty pieces of silver. Judas was the one who kept the money bag. People begin by taking nickels and quarters then the habit grows until perhaps they rob'a bank. The greatest drunkard began with a little drink of liquor. Things creep in slowly at first. Perhaps there \vas something Judas didn't like and he planned revenge. We know he was angry that Mary Magdalene poured the precious precious ointment on Jesus. He was willing to sell Jesus and his soul for thirty pieces of silver. The soldiers had been told by Judas, "The one I shall kiss is the man, seize him." Jesus said to Judas Friend, why are you doing this to me. That is Jesus was willing to forgive Judas, just, as he was willing to forgive Peter and Thomas. The Prodigal son said, "Father, I have sinned forgive me". Judas never asked forgiveness. forgiveness. Kendal United Church bazaar has been set for Nov. 10th. Several from the Kendal area attended the funeral of Mr. Ernest Bryson on March 6th. He lived in Kendal as a boy and went to Kendal School. His father owned the house west of Mrs. Garbutt's and was a teamster hauling logs to the Comstock mill and later to Jackson's mill. The family moved to Kirby in the early twenties. Kendal Institute Penny Sale is May 5th. Continued from "The Pion- eérs of Old Ontario". At a later period came the cainp meetings and these were at times scenes of the most intense excitement. The most exciting time I ever experienced experienced was at an indoor revival held by a man named Beale at Orono, ( in 1843. This man warned the assembled hundreds hundreds to prepare for the end of the world, which he declared was then at hand. One man actually tried to climb a stovepipe on the way to - heaven and one woman went raving mad". At one camp meeting^ held near Myrtle in Ontario County a rowdy led a gang of toughs bent on disturbing the meeting. "A magistrate who , happened to be on the grounds swore in a dozen of us to keep the peace," said Mr. Powers. "As soon as sworn in we went over to the intruders and escorted them to the open road. When we reached the road one of the specials named Mosher, a big muscular muscular chap, went up to the bad men and remarked, 'Now if you chaps have not had enough I will take you on one at a time and lick the crowd'. The challenge was not accepted." accepted." These old time camp meetings meetings were held all the way from Orono to Whitby. Jacob Purdy's bush on the seventh concession of Clarke provided one of the camp sites. Mr. Powers led the singing at many of these gatherings. I heard him sing some of the old hymns when he was well • past three score and ten and ' even then his voice was clear as a bell, says W.L. Smith the writer of this book. The Briggs family of Whitby were also among the famous camp meeting singers of the forties,, and fifties. St. Saviours ANGLICAN CHURCH Orono; Ontario ■ Regular Sunday Worship Service- 10:00 a.m. Rev. (Northumberland (Northumberland and Durham) has said he was disappointed the panel could not come forward with a forthright decision that the Hope Township site was superior to the other two in northern Ontario. However the panel, he said, has indicated the new refinery refinery should be built, and that all three sites are equally acceptable environmentally. Therefore, obviously, environmental environmental factors cannot be used as an argument against building the refinery in Hope Township. This, he said, means the Port Hope area is still very much in the ball game. Further in the release he stated the area must now present a united front, to convince the Trudeau government government that - because of economic and employment considerations - the refinery is more needed here than in the north. And, so far as Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. is concerned, it is much more sensible to locate the refinery close to its existing plant at , Port Hope. My efforts, he said, to impress these arguments upon the government are continuing and, with the valuable assistance Of officials officials and spokesmen from the local municipalities, they will be increased.
