Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 9th, 1979-5 No action by Town for Senior citizens The Town council on Monday Monday was askëd by the Canadian Order of Foresters to give their approval to the rezoning of five acres of land for their proposed senior citizen development in the area of the Goodyear plant in Bowmanville. Mr. Yourth, representing, the interested group, asked that council approve the rezoning in order that they would not have to await a decision from the Ontario Municipal Board. He also said that the OMB hearing would be a cost to not only the Town but also the Canadian Order of Foresters. , For over two years the group have been endeavouring endeavouring to get approval for their proposal. Yourth said they have been running from one property to another and are now back at their original choice. Yourth pointed out to council council that over 800 citizens in the area had signed a petition supporting the proposal. He said there was great need for the development in the Town During the past few weeks and submitting them to their students at the Orono, Public teachers in the form of a "Me School have been busy doing Book". At the beginning of the year we ordered copies of several census microfilms from the National Archives, and they have just arrived in time for display at the Open House. These are the Canada West Censuses for 1842, 1850, 1831, 1861, and the Ontario Census, 1871; they cover not only Clarke Township but in .some cases Darlington, Hope, Man- vers Townships, etc. Microfilms Microfilms like these are of great value to people doing genealogical genealogical research, but even if you are not looking for " information from them, we think you will find the types of questions asked very intriguing. intriguing. For example, the 1842 census is primarily an agricultural agricultural one, and there are sections on the amounts of Wheat, Oats, Barley, Eye, Buck Wheat, ïndian Corn, Peas and Potatoes grown ; the number of Neat Cattle (?), Horses, Sheep and Hogs owned; the "Number of Hives of Bees kept by each family lust season", and the ""Number ""Number of pounds of Maple Sugar made by each family last season". Town sets mill rate The Town of Newcastle council on Monday struck the tax rates for the Town for the year 1979. The total sum to be raised through Taxation has been set at $9,639,929. •This compares with a total of $8,285,000 raised in 1978 or a sixteen percent increase. Of the 1979 figure $2,187,446 will go for Town of Newcastle purposes, an increase of roughly eight percent. $259,- 570 will be raised for area purposes and $2,041,715 for Regional purposes, the latter being and increase of some sixteen percent. Town taxpayers will be taxed for. $2,681,133 for elementary elementary schools and $2,315,- 885 for secondary school purposes. One single mill rate now applies over the whole of the Town of Newcastle being 240.42 mills for residential purposes. Although no actual single mill rate existed last year and estimated 206 mill rate would compare with the present 240.42. As changes have been made in assessments to market value assessment for 1979 there is no way that a general comparison can be made. It would appear however - that those properties that had a drop in assessment through the reassessment will still have a corresponding drop in taxation. t In the village of Orono the mill rate will include the 240.42 overall mill rate plus the area rate of 6.80 mills. • In speaking with the Twon Treasurer, Klaas DeGro'ot he said the Town does not knojv at this time what adjustments will be made to individual assessments through appeals but that a sum of money has been included in the .budget to take care of a limited drop in assessment.
