Most patients aren't ever hospitalized. hospitalized. However, those requiring requiring hospitalization respond to treatment within a few weeks but the disease is not Cured. Rheumatoid arthritis goes in cycles. There are good days and bad days. On the good ones it is important that the patient does not over-do things because that will likely bring on a bad day. The bad days make routine tasks almost impossible. Living with rheumatoid arthritis requires taking your medicine exactly as prescribed prescribed - even when you are feeling well. For example, do just a part of the ironing at one time but come back to it two, three or four times during the day. It is important that the family of someone with rheumatoid rheumatoid arthritis be aware of the nature of the . disease. Most doctors will be happy to discuss this illness with all family members, if you ask. The Arthritis Society reports reports that although there are well over 100 different types of arthritis, many are quite rare and far too complex to describe easily. First, find out exactly which type of arthritis you have, since the outlook and - treatment will vary widely according to which type you have. To illustrate this point, lets look at the three most common kinds of arthritis, namely osteoarthritis, gout and rheumatoid arthritis. The- word arthritis is a catch-all term and describes an illness no better than the - word "stomach-ache". Arthritis means inflammation' of a joint and there are many causes of joint inflammation. OSTEOARTHRITIS Osteoarthritis is the mpst common form of arthritis and would be more correctly called "degenerative joint disease" since inflammation of the joint (the "itis". of arthritis) occurs rarely. More a bother than a serious malady, osteoarthritis is caused by the wearing-away of the cartilage, which covers the, bone ends. This is usually a gradual and natural process although it happens more quickly in some than others for reasons not yet fully understood. Injury can cause osteoarthritis and many people people involved in contact sports, such as football and hockey, become victims. Osteoarthritis usually causes a dull, aching pain and. treatment is in the form of relieving the pain. Although bothersome, osteoarthritis rarely causes disability and only slight reduction of normal normal activity. GOUT Gout is caused • by a chemical imbalance in the body. A normal substance called uric acid is either created in too large quantities or is not excreted by the body • quickly enough. The result is that crystals of ufic acid form in joints - such as the big toe : and cause inflammation and extreme pain. Medication can quickly relieve the inflapi- mation and pain and regular use of medicine as prescribed by your doctor will prevent gout from ever recurring. Gout is not caused by "high living" as was once thought to be the case. Gout is, however, the one form of arthritis where diet may be important . and a doctor will explain this in detail to patients. RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS Although this is one of the most potentially serious types of atthritis, the outlook is now generally good for most patients' and a diagnosis of rheumatoid .arthritis does not automatically mean a future of disability and crippling. .With early diagnosis and treatment, eight out of ten patients caq expect virtually complete control. It is extremely extremely important to take medications exactly as prescribed prescribed even-when the patient feels better*since it is the level of medication in the blood which controls the disease. It is important to maintain that , level. . The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not known, .but the involvement of a virus or viruses is now suspected by scientists.. Rheumatoid arthritis arthritis may strike anyone, at any time, but three times as many women as men are involved arid it usually strikes between the ages of 20 and 40. Symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, morning stiffness, stiffness, swelling of the joints, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet and a general lack of well-being. Rheumatoid arthritis may begin at any age. Many patients show preceding strain, emotional or physical, prior to the onset of disease. However, this is not always the case. • The current thinking is that the disease is life-long in duration and although it may seem to go away and be no problem at all, it. is always there. Rheumatoid arthritis may begin insidiously or abruptly and severely. It starts abruptly abruptly in only a small number of cases. The onset isn't predictable. predictable. The symptoms, fatigue, weakness and mild morning stiffness,- may be present for months or even years. Loss of appetite, weight loss and mild fever are common. Numbness Numbness and tingling, stinging, and burning sensations of fingers and toes may occur. However, swelling of the small joints always eventually eventually occurs. * It may begin in any joint but most often in the small joints of the hand. Oddly, the end joints of the fingers are infrequently involved.
