H-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, My 18th, 1979 Kenda l News It's fun to plan a garden, In beauty all arrayed, • But lovely dreams will not come true Without the fork and spade. ' This writer had a dinner of new potatoes and green peas on Sunday with fresh cherry • 1 pie for dessert. A dinner fit > for a king. How fortunate we Canadians are to be able to grow our own food! Yet we are told that 26 acres of good farm land an hour goes out of production. It is being covered covered with houses and golf courses etc. The time is coming when the cherry and peach orchards of the Niagara Niagara Penninsula will be â thing ; of the past. The best peaches of the world are grown in the ; Niagara District. ; Just a reminder to be sure ! and water your tomatoes if ■; this dry weather continues. | Otherwise they get a black : spot on the bottom of each j tomato and fall off (dry rot). ; This year is much like last ■ year which was very dry in ! .July. Then on July 22 came a very severe electric storm ; when water lay in ponds all I around the village and some , ; of the roads were gullied out. It's not ' often that we ; Kendal folk go on two bus trips in one week but we did : last week. The tf.C.W. took a ' bus to Parkwood the former home of Col. R.S. McLaughlin : nin Oshawa. Then on Saturday Saturday the Orangemen and : ladies journeyed to Piéton.' Colonel R.S. .McLaughlin I was born in 1871 in Ennisk- | illen and lived till 1972. He j was apprenticed in his fath- ! er's Oshawa carriage works ! when he was sixteen. In 1907 [ he established the McLaugh- i lin Motor Car Company. In j 1918 it became part of j General Motors with Mc- j Laughlin as President of the 1 Canadian Company and Vice- i President of the American ; Company. His former home in Osh- | awa, Parkwood contains fifty- | five rooms which are beauti- | fully decorated and are furn- Î ished with priceless antique ; furniture from all parts of the f world. The large dining room I table seats twenty-four. One ' of the many paintings on the : wall was a colour portrait ; taken on the occasion of I his eighty-fifth birthday. He and Mrs. McLaughlin are ■ seated and they are sur- f founded by their five daugh- ters. One of our party said he | .would like to spend the whole ï day looking around. The : flowers and the lawns and : fountains are beautiful beyond beyond description. Some of our ladies plan to return and have lunch on the ground at a later trophy for the best in the parade which was indeed quite an honour as there were several ladies lodges in the parade. A number of ladies are from the Kendal area. They marched over two and a half miles past some very fine stately residences. Picton has a population of over 5,000 a busy lake port and tourist centre with a huge sports area situated in their spacious spacious fair grounds where the parade began. Brockville made a fine showing they had a L.O.B.A. lodge also. Then came the Bowmanvilie Canadian Canadian Legion Band in their Kiltie Uniforms very fine indeed.
