2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 22nd, 1979 Orono Weekly Times WHAT OTHERS SAY from the Oshawa Times JURY RECOMMENDATIONS SHOULD BE 4 CONCERN. Ontario Health Minister Dennis Timbrell says his visit to Bowmanville Memorial Hospital this week "has nothing to do" with recommendations from coroners' juries over the last few years which have urged changes in medical procedures which have contributed to deaths. But why didn't his visit concern those recommendations? Isn't it reasonable that a hospital that has been the subject of 11 coroners' inquests since 1974 and which has been blasted by different juries for various medical reasons, should be examined by the health minister? Timbrell says the hospital is "very effectively run" and said the hospital has "bêen a leader in the field" of engaging outside consultants" to tell them how to save money". The health minister talked more about budget matters adding "I felt it was appropriate to meet the people responsible for operating the hospital so when the time comes for increasing the budget, I will have a mental image of what I am talking about". The coroners' juries' recommendations though had nothing to do with budgetary matters but simply with medical procedures which affect patients. Surely that should have been the number one concern of the health minister. To ignore the recent recommendations and worry simply about the administrative facet does a disservice to the public. OUR FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM?? It has become most apparent that if, in North America, we do have a free enterprise system, it cannot survive without government manipulation and or support. Governments Governments over the past decades have been drawn into the business structure of the country and due to our system cannot nor will not leave the area to what one may call a free enterprise system. ■ Neither the United States, and to a lesser degree, Canada, can afford to allow the Chrysler Corporation to drop out of the automotive industry. The lay-off of some 300,000 people in the U.S. is a figure the country cannot afford. Such a layoff in the auto industry could also have a wide effect in other sectors of the country's economy. Tile U.S, has made it known that they will support financially Chrysler to keep it in business. What else can they really do. Governments, both federally, provincially and state, are directly involved in dangling million dollar carrots for the profitable auto manufacturers such as GM and Ford and thus governments are part of the so-called free enterprise system. They have and will continue to manipulate the economic system in North America. It has become a necessity in an endeavour to keep a nation and its people on an even keel.
