The Durham Central Agricultural Agricultural Society Fair held in Orono for three and a half days over last week-end could be termed nothing else than an absolute success. The weatherman provided his delicate touch and attendance was UD some eighteen percent over that of last year breaking breaking a new all-time record. A total of 10,989 admissions for cars and spectators were sold, during the period of the fair resulting in a total take at the gates of $18,705. The gate receipt sale increased by 1600 over that of the 1978 edition of the Orono Fair. Figures show that attendance attendance on Thursday night increased possibly due to the holding of the Queen of the Fair contest. A slight drop shows for the Friday show and even on Saturday but come Sunday attendance jumped from a 1200 figure last year to over 5,000 last Sunday. The moving of harness harness racing to Sunday along with the Country Music Jamboree Jamboree and the Hunters end Jumpers placed Sunday at the top of the three days as to attendance. ' , In speaking to the secretary of the fair, Mrs. A. Ayre, she said that inside exhibits were up considerably this year over previous _years. The school exhibits were exceptional exceptional and like other inside exhibits were well displayed. The serving of hot meals in the community room of the arena was an unqualified success with patronage well above all expectations. The poultry show had well over 600 entries and the rabbit show boasted the largest entries of any previous year. The cattle show and horse show were of interest to many and this is not to forget the goat show. MacDonald's farm returned returned to the fair this year in a somewhat interesting format and created interest both for young and old alike. WINS ORONO FIGURE SKATING DRAW Mrs. Cathy Van Klink, prono Estates, was the winner of the $500 draw sponsored by the Orono Figure Skating Club at the fair on Saturday. Greg Vey was the seller of the winning ticket while last year'Bvinner, David Mercer, made the draw. » PARK TO BE NAMED; IN HONOUR OF ALEX CARRUTHERS The Alex Carruthers Memorial Park in Garden Hill will be officially opened on September 29th. The activities of the day will include not only 1 the dedication of the park but also athletic and entertainment events. The official opening will be held at 2:00 p.m. Various improvements have befen made to the park during the year including new washrooms, change rooms, baseball backstop and the inclusion of an additional two acres to the park. TO HOLD EVENT IN ORONO ARENA ( The Newcastle arid District Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual Oktoberfest Dance in the Orono Arena this September 22 due to the fact that à new ice pad is being installed in the Newcastle Arena and thus is not available for use. Such events as the Pancake breakfast, bake sale and other events will be held in the Village. WANTS TO STAY IN NORTHUMBERLAND RIDING It has been reported that George Hees, M.P, Northumberland riding, is not interested in giving up the riding to take over the position of High Commissioner in London which is being vacated by Paul Martin. There has been some speculation that Hees is being considered for the position leaving an opening in the riding to draft either Jean Piggott or Robert de Cotret as the conservative candidate in the necessary by-election. BUSY DAY FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT The local fire department answered three fire calls on Monday. There was a call to an electrical fire when a tree fell over hydro lines on the sixth line of Clarke, a call to the home of Henry Aikens, Taunton Road west which resulted in smoke damage and a call to the Orono Tree Nursery to a fire that was under control. 2000 ATTEND ANNUAL BARBECUE Some two thousand visitors attended the annual Solicitor Generals Annual Barbect^ and Picnic last Wednesday. The barbecue was held at the Devil's Elbow Ski Club near the home of the Lawrences. < , September 12th, 1979_ CULTURAL CENTRE WITHDRAWS REZONING The Japanese Cultural Centre have written the Planning Department of the Town of Newcastle and asked that their rezoning application for lands east of Orono be withdrawn. It had been the intention of the Japanese Cultural Centre to develop a recreational and cultural centre oh close- to 300 acres a few miles east of the Village. In speaking with Planning Director, Don Smith, he said the letter stated that the Cultural Centre had been unable to complete the purchase of the property. The Director said he was disappointed in that the project will not go ahead as • toe felt it would be a good development for the Town. The Region of Durham had amended the Regional v Official Plan for the project and the amendment has been approved by the Ministry of Housing. A prize winning calf mechanical, in the tractor pull and to the animal species in the horse drawing contest all held interest for those in attendance. 'Of course the Sunday program program ' of harness racing, Jamboree and Hunters and Jumpers had to be of special interëst to a great number of people. Added to all this is the Queen of the Fair contest, the Road to the Isle show, the school talent show and the adult talent show, and of course the increased number of rides on the midway. The 1979 edition of the , Orono Fair was indeed the 'best ever'. Contract let for Orono storm sewers Council on Monday accepted accepted a recommendation from the Public Works department that the tender of Ron Robinson Ltd., Oshawa, be accepted in the amount of $63,832.44 for the installation of storm sewers on Division Street in Orono. Also included in the tender was work in Bowmanville at a total cost of $36,064.21. The letting of the contracts is subject to Robinson meeting meeting the Specifications. , tjpon question from Counc. Hobbs, Director of Public Works, Jack Dunham, stated that' $105,000 had been set aside in the budget for the two works and that the total price of the contracts was less than that in the budget. He said with the addition of engineering engineering fees the total cost would still be within the budgeted amount. In speaking with the direct-. or of works following Monday's Monday's meeting he said that the installation of the storm sewers in Orono oq Division Street was expected to start sometime this month. Town council letting contract for ice pad Council of. the Town of Newcastle are to sign a contract with Cimco Con- 'struction for the removal of the old* ice pad at the Newcastle Arena and the construction of a new pad at a cost of $65,200. Council is taking precautions precautions in the works and have asked for a bond to be in the hands of the Town. This bond was to *have been delivered to the Town on Tuesday. Council -has also asked that the cost of a full-time inspection of the works also be obtained and this cost Will be considered by council. - During the discussion of the works Counc. Cowman asked who was to oversee the project and under what terms and conditions. Town Manager, Alex Guiler' said that Totten Sims Hubicki wôuid be inspecting the works on an ongoing basis but as yet no agreement had been reached with the engineering firm.
