2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 26th, 1979 Orono Weekly Times KEEPING UP WITH THE TIMES Orono Fuel and Lumber Ltd. located on Station Street in'the Village are certainly to be congratulated in their expansion of services to the building industry in this community. Last Friday through the vehicle of an Open House the new facilities at Orono Fuel and Lumber were presented to the public and of which maçy took the opportunity to attend. The investment of many thousdands of dollars by thé McLarens in their business is a clear indication of their determination of staying abreast of the times, providing better service and quality as well as confidence in themselves as private entrepreneurs arid confidence in the community. Certainly the new facilities at Orono Fuel and Lumber must be a great lift to the owners, in their determination to create a one-stop building centre in this community. Congratulations. THERE WERE MANY SIDES TO THE PROMOTION The organization and promotion of the sale of new furniture by the Curvply-Plydesign Life-Line Committee over the past week-end had many aspects other thari a promotion to raise monies for their sponsorship of two South Indo-Chinese-families into the Village of Orono. Of course the prime purpose of the promotion appears to have been met and with committee members more than well pleased with the response from the general public in the Orono area. The promotion did have a number of other aspects which became offshoots from the prime purpose and these are certainly well worthwhile mentioning. Certainly there was a great generosity by both Curvply and Plydesign in supporting their employees in the endeavour pf raising funds for their sponsorships. Much of the furniture from the two firms was provided at a cost less than production cost. This support from the local industry allowed the committee to provide furniture at costs that resulted in almost unheard-of bargains. Again another benefit of the promotion and that going to the purchaser as he or she supported the program of the Life-Line committee. The promotion also brought to the front line and open to the public an array of the end product produced in the two plants in Orono, Many attending the-sale were unaware of stature of the 'life-style' furniture produced at Plydesign and expressed amazement of this enterprise within their own community and where many within the community gain their livelihood. Further it brought many of those at the plants from behind their desks and out of production to assist with the sale and communicate with the general public from the area and to promote their product and .explain the operations in Orono. From all angles it was a great promotion. Congratulations. ' 1 THERE ARE TIMES FOR DECISIONS • The Town of Newcastle council on Monday night came close to wavering on a decision that if not made could have been costly in the future. Public opinion in Hampton over the maintaining of water level in the mill pond had some council members near the point of taking action as to required repairs to save the mill dam road. The issue of a proposal from' the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority as to a recreational area in the community including the pond and stream was turned thumbs down by the general public. As a result no further action has been taken by the Conservation Authority. Council fell in line with the pubiic opinion at the time. Of more recent date citizens became upset and complained to council when the water level in the pond was reduced in an effort to save the dam and road. Council on Monday night were asked to request the Conservation Authority to lower the water level in order that the repairs could be made to the cjarti road which now is closed. It was pointed out to council that seepage through the dam berm would eventually destroy the dam with possible further storms. 1 Some council members wanted to await a public meeting in Hampton to point out to residents the need for the road repairs and thus the lowering of the water level in the pond. The public meeting will not likely determine anything with some factions wanting to maintain the water level in the pond, others wanting the road repaired, and others still concerned over the proposal of the recreational area. , Council did finally decide to request the lowering of the water level and thus carried out the responsibility delegated to them when elected to office. There comes q time when a decision must be made even in the light of determined opposition from the electorate. 1 Women enter aviation Non-traditional courses are opening up for female students, students, and more and more women each year are considering considering Technology as a career. Catharines. The girls have a variety of reasons for selecting the aviation industry as a career. They are interested in flying, and they recognize that on the technical side there are excellent job opportunities. They have been getting good exposure to this technical , area. During their first year their instruction included drafting, electronics, computer computer science and applied mechanics. This year they will take more specialized aviation subjects such as Aero and Theory of Flight, Aero Systems, Electronics for Avionics, Meteorology and Navigation. The third and final year will get into such subject areas as design and production, airfield airfield operations, aircraft economics and operational research. Before coming to the ! College three of the female students were grade 13 graduates and one was a grade 12 graduate from academic courses - but they were proficient in mathematics mathematics and science. The girls recognize that they are "trail blazing", but Lorraine Rudnicki says, "we are not feminists or Women's Libbers - we simply recognize • that, there are good job ' opportunities in this area, and we want to take advantage of them. Furthermore, we enjoy our Technology courses". Gail Greenwood feels that "the jobs are there for women, just the same as for men, if we prove ourselves". And she hopes they will be successful and "open the door" for other women in the future. Ail girls found their first year in Technology challenging, challenging, and they are pleased that they can now apply the general knowledge mey have learned to a specific area - where they want to be in aviation. They emphasize that they are not treated any differently differently in class - by either the instructors or the male students. students. However, they say it is extremely important to keep up with their work, because the course is very demanding.
