Report from Queen's Park .Sam Cureati» M.P.P., Durham East The Ministry of Transportation Transportation and Communications' Communications' proposed widening of highway 115-35 has created a great deal of interest in Durham East riding. This highway cuts across the east end of the riding snaking north from the 401 to Enterprise Enterprise Hill, where it separates into highways 35 and 115. At present 115-35 is merely a two lane road - in spite of the fact that it carries traffic north to Lindsay, Peterborough Peterborough and cottage country in the Kawartha Lakes region. region. When the highway was first constructed, the two lanes were all that was required to handle traffic. Thse days however, traffic has greatly increased, causing causing frequent tie-ups and unfortunately, frequent accidents, accidents, many of them fatal - . such as the recent mishap on October 18th at Somerville Drive and 115-35. The number of deaths that occur on this highway have, indeed, become become a matter of concern. All in all, highway 115-35 is no longer in any shape to handle the volume of traffic that-' passes over it every wèek. As a result of this situation,' the Ministry of Transportation Transportation and Communications Communications decided that improvements improvements had to be made. They considered the possibility of extending highway 407, but discovered that this work would take 10-15 years to complete and cost between $300 and $400 million.-. The Ministry then looked into the idea of building a separate roadway for traffic going onto 115, between the 401 up to the present junction at Enterprise Hill. This construction, construction, although it would take only 5 years, would involve the expropriation of farm lands and cost the taxpayer $13-$20 million. As well, the roadside businesses along the present 115-35 would suffer from the subsequent decrease in the volume of traffic. In the long-run, the extension extension of highway 407 will probably become a reality. But this will take many years, and in the meantime traffic on 115-35 will increase, causing causing further tie-ups, accidents . and deaths. Faced with Jhis situation, ,the Ministry of Transportation and Com- muhicàtions decided to propose propose a widening of 115-35 to four Janes with a barrier median. Complaints have been voiced voiced by area residents that this improved highway will be impossible to cross, and, in effect, cut the riding in two. The Ministry has tried to answér this criticism by promising to install various interchanges along the proposed proposed route. But there are some who are not. satisfied with the Ministry's Ministry's plans. As a result, on November 6, I have asked a delegation of concerned citizens citizens to visit with the Minister of Transportation and Communications, Communications, the Hon. James Snow: I am certain that this meeting will help clarify the situation for both sides and possibly some specific compromises compromises can be resolved. Personally, as the member for Durham East, I feel that I , must look to the general safety issue above all else in this matter. Our province's highways are the lifelines of all forms of , business, commerce ahd recreation. recreation. I am sure that it is as much your wish, as it is miné, that Ontario's roads be safe and efficient carriers of both goods and people. Might I add that happily enough, Kathy and I drove safely, Saturday night past, to the General Sikorski Polish Veterans Association's Annual Annual Charter Night, and, as always, had a wonderful time.
