I can't honestly answer their questions with an exact figure, but I feel fairly confident in predicting . that the price of oil will be going up this winter. As yet there has been no official announcement on how high prices will go. The setting of oil and gas prices is the responsibility of the Federal Government and i Prime Minister Clark is still ■ involved in final discussions ' on this point with the .producing .producing provinces. Ontario has consistently, opposed any further increases increases in oil prices beyond the previously agreed to increase of $1 per barrel in the new year. The Provincial Government Government has taken this stand, not merely because of the dam- ' age that such a rise will have on Ontario's economy, but the . increased strain that these ; increases will put on confed- ! eration. It has been estimated that a $1 per barrel increase in the price of crude oil will take $300 million away from the Ontario consumer. Such an increase will have roughly the same effect as a 1 percent rise in the sales tax. Mr. Davis has recommended recommended however, that if oil prices must increase, that changes should be made to the way in which oil revenue is distributed. distributed. The Premier has argued that oil companies are already making large enough profits to be able to finance continued exploration and TELEPHONE 623-6555 JOHN MANUEL> C.G.A. Ontario has proposed that the new revenue created by price increases should be re-invested in the Canadian economy to encourage the development of alternate en- •ergy sources, improve con- , servation programs and help keep our industries competitive. competitive. Ontario's proposal however,* however,* has not met with support from' the other pro- • vinces, or the federal government government In the meantime, the Ontario Ontario Government has established established priorities for energy consumption in the province. The Ministry of Energy has set the target of reducing oil use in Ontario to zero growth by 1985. By 1995, the Ministry . plans to have increased the •numbèr of renewable arid , recoverable energy sources to such an extent that they will be able to contribute 43 percent of the energy produced produced in the province.
