United Counties Hockey games. Orono goals scored by: Brian Hill, Darren Lewis, and Jeff Martin. The only assist went to Robert Snoek. Jason Carleton played ; another outstanding game, as he picked up his first shutout. On Friday,. November 23rd the Orono United Counties Atoms hosted Baltimore 1. This was a fast-paced hockey game, with Orono coming up winners with a 3-0 score. This was Orono's third win in 4 Stuff Pharmacy Bantams ; November 17 - Orono 2, Oshawa 4 On Saturday, Stutts. played an exhibition game at the Civic against the Telco Cable Minor Bantams. Orono opened the scoring with a goal by Paul Lane midway through the first period. This seemed to spark the Oshawa team who then scored 2 goals 10 seconds apart. During the second period Orono just couldn't get on track, picking up 4 penalties and playing most of the period shorthanded. Oshawa scored 1 goal during this period. In the third period Orono picked up another penalty which proved costly as Oshawa scored A seconds later. Orono came alive after Oshawa's 4th goal when Ted Oster scored with the help and hard work by Jeff Gray and Steve Sawyer. The game ended 4-2 for Oshawa with Orono coming to play leaving their game at home. November 22 - Orono 2, Fenelon Falls 3 Orono travelled to Fenelon Falls on a very foggy night to play 2 periods of their best hockey of the year. Penalties again played a big part with Orono getting 6 and Fenelon Falls recieving receiving only 1. Orono fell asleep in the third period and allowed Fenelon to score 2 unanswered goals. O.M.H.A Orono 3, Manvers 1 • On Tuesday, November 20th the Tennant Fuel Atoms played host to Manvers for an exhibition game. Orpno ; opened the scoring on a goal by Bill Buchanan with assists going to Patrick Woods and Brad Roberts. David Bailey then scored his first goal of the season with • the assist going to Wayne Atkins to make it . ,2-0. Manvers made the score 2-1 on a goal by David Glasbergen assisted by Maurice dharland. Orono then made it 3-1 on a goal by Wayne Atkins assisted by Steven Lycett. In the second and third periods both teams stuck to défensive hockey and neither team allowed a goal to end the game 3-1 for Orono. Special mention to Kevin Hartwig and David Bailey for an" excellent game. Pickering 7, Orono 1 , On Wednesday, November 21, 1979, the Tennant Fuel Atoms travelled to Pickering Village and went down to defeat 7-1. 1 In the first and second periods, the local boys played some good, close exciting hockey. The first, period was scoreless with many excellent scoring chances by both teams. Pickering opened the scoring with four minutes left in the second period on a goal by Derek Lee assisted by Andrew Moffat and John Steeves. Orono came right bpck on a goal by Scott McCullough, assisted by Kevin Geoff Green played an outstanding game in net making many key saves during the game. November 26 - Orono 2, Fenelon Falls 10 After playing such a good game against Ferielon Falls last week the local boys looked very bad letting Fenelon Falls score only 30 seconds into the first period with a shot from deep in the corner. Geoff Green did not make a move and the shot went high into the corner with defencemen Murray Dennis and Glyn Jenkins caught •out of position. Again Orono picked up too many penalties hurting the team effort. Penalties: Steve Sawyer tripping, Muray Dennis roughing, Scott Richards high sticking, cross checking, Duff Hamre charging and interference, Glyn Jenkins roughing. With Orono playing a man short for 14 minutes during the game, Fenelon took advantage and scored 10 goals making the local sqüad look very foolish as they never got in the game. Orono finally got on the scoreboard late in the third with Scott Prescott scoring and Mike Hamel getting the assist. Duff Hamre scored Orono's second goal with assist going to Steve Sawyer. This was a bad game for Orono, lets hope they get back on track soon and start playing as a team. .Atoms Hartwig to make it 1-1. Pickering then went ahead 2-1 on a goal by Mark Hughes assisted by Darren Driver. In the third period Pickering came , up with 5 unanswered goals to end the game ' Pickering 7, Orono 1. • Special mention to Scott McCullough McCullough an6 Kevin Hartwig for a strong game up front and to Shane Harbinson for his shutout for the period and a half played. Markham 6, Orono 2 On Saturday, November 24th the Tennant Fuel Atoms played host to Markham and went down to defeat 6-2. Markham jumped into the lead 2-0 on two first pferitid goals and added three in the second to make it 5-0 before Orono scored two with 22 seconds left in the second period. Wayne Atkins scored the first of two with the assist going to David Bailey. Wayne then scored his second goal 17 seconds later with assists going to David Bailey and Kevin Mumford. Markham added one more in the third to end the game 6-2. Special mention to Wayne Atkins and David Bailey for a good effort. Future games: Saturday, Dec. 1, Bowmanville at Orono, 7 p.m. ; Sunday, Dec. 2, Orono at Markham, 5 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 3, Orono at Bay Ridges, 6:50 p.m. OronoO.M.H 3 WINS THIS WEEK • This was a busy week for the Midgets, but playing sound hockey came up \rith three big wins. On Wednesday, November 21, the .crew travelled to ' Cannington. The first period was a .high, scoring one, with nine goals being tipped in. Orono charged ahead on the opening . J A. Midgets whistle. Steve Wood Ranged in a rebound, from Paul Reed and Pete Kruhkert. Then Steve Stec caught the corner, passed along by Kirk Carr and Paul King. Cannington then came back with three goals. Paul Reed got the game tied again, connecting with Pete Krukkert and S'teve Stfec. Cannington then scored two more to go Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, November 28th, 1979-7 ahead by the same amount. Orono came one closer, this time from Vance Prue, working With his linemates, Kirk Carr and Steve Stec, to end the period. Cannington opened the scoring in the second period to go up two goals again., Determination prevailed however, and Orono fought back. Vance Prue got his second of the night, this time from Terry Hedges. Kirk Carr tied it up, passed Over by Steve Stec, to end the second period. Terry Hedges blasted one in from the point, passed back by Pete Krukkert. Cannington tied the see-saw battle up again. But at the ,242 mark, the team selected captain and alternates came through, Paul Reed snapping in the winner, passed along beautifully by Pete Krukkert and Duane Major. This ended the game Orono 8 to Cannington 7. The next night the trip was to Sunderland. Tjie team played exceptionally exceptionally well and defeated them by a score of 8-0. Three first period goals were scored by Orono, off the sticks of Rhys Jenkins, Paul Reed and Vance Prue. Assists went to Paul King, William Van Seggelen, Kirk Carr and Steve Stec. The second period saw two goals netted. Steve Graham got an unassisted goal, then Steve Wood back- handed one in, from Paul Reed and Steve Graham. Kirk Carr opened the scoring in the third, from Terry Hedges. Then Kirk snapped in another, this one from Rhys Jenkins and Steve Graham. Duane Major tipped in the slapshot from the point, from Paul Reed, to end the game. Dan Barlow and Bob Zych shared the goal tending duties, to earn thé shut-out. Fenelon Falls journeyed down from the north country on Monday night, to return defeated. Captain Paul Reed made his presence felt, as he scored the first four goals. The first one was from Steve Wood, and on the second one it was Pete Krukkert and Steve Wood. Then Paul connected with Terry Hedges and Pete Krukkert again for the third goal. The fourth goal saw Duane Major pass to Paul Reed, Paul to Pete Kriikkert, Pete back to Paul, and in it went, beautiful. Ken Farrow drove one between the goalies pads to open the third period scoring, passed along by his linemate Dennis Klawitter. Fenelon Falls then scored to break the shutout attempt. The first line came through again, Steve Wood getting the counter from Paul Reed and Pete Krukkert which was Pete's fourth assist for the night. This ended the game Orono 6 to Fondions 2. Again the joint effort of goal tenders Dan Barlow arid Bob Zych was superb. The Midgets return to Fenelon on Friday night and next Monday night at 8:30, Cannington will be in town. Orono Novice Hockey ORONO WINS 2 ON WEEKEND November 23rd, Orono played Bew- dley 9-1. First period goals .by Brian Goodwin, unassisted; Ted Gaudet 3;. with 1 assist going to Doug Bedford and Jeff Koofmans; Todd Thertell 1 unassisted. Second period goals: Brent Stapleton 1;' assisted by Brian Goodwin and Martin Vanderheyden, Gary Thajer, assists going to Brent Stapleton and Brian Goodwin; Jeff Koopmans 1 unassisted. Third pèriod , goal Jeff Koopmans, unassisted. November 25th, Orono travelled'to Port Hope to play Port Hope Hood's Supply coming home with an 8-0 win. First period goals by Brent Stapleton, assist" by Laurens Kaldeway; Gary Thajer, assist by Brian Goodwin; Ted Gaudet 3, assists Todd Thertell 3. Second period goals by Todd Thertell 2; Ted Gaudet, 1 assist. Third period goals by Laurens Kaldeway 1, assists Gary Thajer. Todd Hutton played in goal getting his 3rd shut-out. Jamie Schmyr had a 2 minute tripping penalty All the boys played well with Doug Bedford, Jamie Schmyr and Tim Bailey playing a good game. Next league game is December 5th, 1979, Orono goes te Newcastle for a 6:00 p.m. game. Friday, December 7th is our next home game with Baltimore 2 coming to play a 6:30 game. Custodians would join Durham Brd system A petition from western area custodians was received by the Finance committee on Monday asking that the Newcastle area be joined with the Durham Board of Education Education rather than remaining with the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education. Education. ' The petition was referred to a meeting being held on Friday when the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education will be present with members of the Town council.
