Board and teachers go to mediation It was agreed between the Elementary teachers' and the ( Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education on Monday that they disband with further negotiations between between the' two negotiating teams and call for mediation. The two groups are still some distance apart on a number of issues including salaries and benefits. In the recent Fact Finder's report made public on November November 28 a number of differences were outlined by Eugene Deszcâ. The elementary elementary teachers wish to have a section concerning teacher's retention included in the collective agreement while the board wishes to continue with the status quo which they claim is working well. The fact finder points out that" both groups agree as to what should happen but are lacking in accord as to where the matter should be placed. In respect to salaries the fact finder has stated that there will have to be a movement of both parties if agreement is to be reached. He said the teachers did not appear tp be in a catch-up position in comparison with salaries paid in neighbouring, areas. The elementary , tpacheirs are asking for an overall increase of 10 percent excluding excluding increments for the 79-80 period. They wish 5 percent be a percentage increase over the grid while the other five percent, be a lump sum increase based on the average average teacher salary of $19,220. The teachers feel this increase increase plus the increment of 2.06 percent would only maintain maintain their current economic position. The Board on the other hand proposes an increase of 4.27 percent excluding increments increments which would provide an average increase of $818. With the addition of the annual increment the inc- As to consultants responsibility responsibility allowance the teachers are asking an increase of $449.00 over the current rate which would bring the allowance allowance to $3,200. The Board is offering a ,total of $2,800.00 being an increase of $49.00 over last year. Another item of discord comes through the teachers wishing to maintain the retirement gratuity through the accumulation of sick- leave credits. In the'past this has been accorded teachers but the board feels the significance of the retirement gratuity has been reduced by pension plans, insurance , plans,/etc. The Board wishes to grandfather the sick leave reas^ reaches to 6.33 percent * credits as of September 1st, or an average increase of $1,213.00. The Board feels its offer is fair to the teachers and to the _ taxpayers of Northumberland and Newcastle. Newcastle. The Board also points out that it is the third highest paying Board of its eight- neighbours while the .per capita income of the tax- pa ers in the area is fifth line with its neighbours. 1979 'and maintain those credits only that have been built over the past years. The fact finder referred to a former fact finder who had reported that consideration should be given to sick leave credits being accumulated in , light of the fact that pensions, insurance and disability allowances allowances are' now available.
