10-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, June, 4th. 1980 Motors. Sam at Queen's Park ; This week I'd like to write about a problem that is close to home for many of us in Durham East. That problem is the slowdown and lay-offs in the automobile industry throughout North America, In our riding there is a General Motors of Canada Limited parts facility, while in Oshawa there are several other GM plants as well. Each of these plants, and the workers in them, have been effected by production slowdowns slowdowns and lay-offs. On the whole however, GM is not doing as badly as other automobile manufacturers, such as Chrysler and Ford. e GM is a large company with many resources, and, more importantly, it has v been building a product - an efficient compact car - that is more competitive than those of its competitors. With higher costs for gas and maintenance, small, more fuel efficient cars and the most popular on the sales lot these days. Fewer and fewer people are investing their savings in a large, luxurious sedan. Because GM anticipated this trend several years ago, it is not suffering as badly as other automobile manufacturers manufacturers ; however this has not prevented the company from suffering from slower sales. Fortunately production slowdowns and lay-offs have remained below the record levels set during the 1975 slump in sales. Essentially, the automobile industry is strong in Canada. About 90 percent of the travel, in our nation is made by car rather than bus, train or aircraft. No one foresees the : present slowdown as being a long lasting one. Canada has suffered in the past because there have been e no adequate research and development facilities established established here that would allow our own industry to lead in innovation. The recent settlè- ment With Chrysler ' has provided for research facilities facilities in the Windsor area. GM, I am pleased to say, has plans to invest $2 billion in new facilities in Canada over the next few years. This growth and development .will benefit Durham East to a considerable extent. During a debate on the automobile layoff situation iri the Provincial Legislature last month, I indicated my optomism in the strength of the auto industry and my belief that the present slowdown slowdown will be a short one. For my pains, a member of the New Democratic Party accused accused me of disregarding the needs of my constituents and being in the pay of General Such an accusation does not even need a reply, however I would like to make clear in this column that I do not underestimate the hardship presently being felt by the families of workers who have been laid-off. I am pleased to see that a contract has been awarded by the Ministry of Transports ation and Communications to upgrade- Graham Creek bridge and approaches, Newcastle, Newcastle, including work east of C.P.R overhead. Might I thank Mr. and Mrs, Francis Chan for their kind invitation to the first local artists craft show organized by them which Kathy and I and my, two boys attended over the long weekend. Congratulations to the parents, parents, students and staff of Vincent Massey Public School's 25th anniversary celebration over the long weekend. Congratulations also to the graduating students of Durham Durham Cpllege. which held its 12th annual convocation on 24th May. Finally, thanks to Councillor Councillor Cy Elsey and Don Calder for participating in the GO Train phone-in T.V. show.
