«3 ■4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 18th, 1981 ( SPORTS ) Orono Tykes On Saturday, February 14]th Scott McAllister, playing in goal for Orono, shut out the visiting Newcastle Tykes by a score of 5-0. , The puck travelled from end to end throughout the first and second period. Kent Vanderheyden scored with -2:06 remaining in the first period, assisted by Craig Andrews and Shane Jones. Jason Rogers, in the Newcastle net, was tested many times in the second period but woul.çl not allow anyone to score. The third period saw Orono take control on a goal by Kevin Roberts assisted by David Sheridan and Jason Brachvogel. Kent Vanderheyden scored unassisted at the ten minute mark and two minutes later got his hat trick assisted by Jason Majors. The final goal was scored by Jason 'J.B.' Brachvogel unassisted. Final score Orono 5, Newcastle 0. On Sunday, February 15th, the Orono Tykes travelled to Manvers for the second week in a row. Last week's game was won by Orono 2-1 so Orono brought along their new mascot, 'Tyke', and he helped them to a 5-1 victory. Scoring for Orono at 1:08 was Kevin Roberts assisted by Kent Vanderheyden. One minute later Scott Williams, assisted by Kent Vanderheyden and Jason Majors, fired the puck past Jeff Terry in the Manvers net. Second period goals by Kent and another by Jason Majors gave Orono a 4-1 lead. Orono's final goal Was scored by Kevin Roberts assisted by David Sheridan. Final score Orono 5, Manvers 1. Congratulations to the Orono Tykes who now have a terrific season record of 11 ' wins, 1 tie and-no losses. Tennant Fuel Atoms On Saturday, Feb. 14th the Tennant Fuel O.M.H.A. Atoms played host to Bobcaygeon in their first playoff game and salvaged a l-l tie. The first two periods were scoreless with both teams having numerous scoring chances only to come up empty handed. Finally in the third period Bocaygeon opened the scoring on a goal by Scott Kimble, with 3:10 left in the game Orono ' tied the score on a goal by David Bailey assisted by Brian Hill and Kevin Mumford, Special mention to Jeff Martin for an outstanding game in goal to keep the boys in the game. Next home games: Saturday, February February 21st, vs. Minden, 7:00 p.m, ; Monday, Feb. 23rd vs Minden, 7:00 p.m. Come on out and cheer the local boys on. Kinsmen U.C. Bantams Over the past week the Orono Kinsmen Bantams had their game in Baltimore cancelled because of weather conditions and played at home Friday night to come out ahead by a 3-2 score over Port Hope, This was a very closely fought game with Port Hope getting 8 penalties and Orono receiving 6. Orono produced very steady goaltending by a rookie in this position, Paul Rosseau. The goal scorers for Orono were Robert FYench, Greg Stacey and David Dawes, assisting on the goals were Doug Doxtater, Stephen Murree, Raymond Ripley and Mark Henry. Orono's next and last league game will be in Baltimore this Wednesday night to make up for the cancelled one last week. After that it will be on to playoffs, of which dates, times and teams haven't been decided. Maybe by next week we will have more information for this column and who knows, this team could go all the way. Taylor's Midgets On February, lfith Orono Midgets travelled to Sunderland and after a fine team effort managed to come away with a 5-1 victory. ' The game started slowly with Orono scoring the first goal of the period by Ken Farrow. Then in the third period Steve Stec scored from Scott Prescott followed by Scott Prescott's goal unassisted. Ken Farrow scored again assisted by Paul King,,Kirk Carr closed out the scoring assisted by Jeff Dillon and Steve Stec. Sunderland replied with a goal late in the game. The Orono boys showed good hustle in this game. ' O.M.H.A. Stutts Bantams Feb. 14th - Orono 10, Bobcaygeon 4 Orono played host to Bobcaygeon on Saturday evening. It was the second meeting of the round robin for the teams and Orono came away with a big win. Bobcaygeon had two players out because of injuries and had to play with only eight skaters but they were a ^ood club and always dangerous. Geoff Green played goal for the first and second periods with Rick Martin handling the job in the third, both goalies had two scored on them. Scoring for Orono were Glyn Jenkins 5, Mike Hamel l, Greg Vey 3, Murray Dennis 1, assists going to Steve Sawyer 2, Derek Mumford 1, Mike Hamel 3, Guy Brachvogel Brachvogel 2, Murray Dennis 2, Fred Cashin 1, Ken Bailey 1. Feb. 16th - Orono 13, Sunderland 1 Orono travelled to Sunderland on Monday evening to play them. for the second time in the round robin playoff series. The Sunderland teaiVi is not very strong this year and the local boys took s control very early and never let up. The third period became very chippy as Sunderland's frustration began to show. Rick Martin played goal in the first two periods and was scored on with a screened shot from in front of. the net. Geoff Green played the third period having only a few shots to turn away. Minden comes to Orono on Saturday evening and then the local boys travel to Minden on Sunday. The local boys have four wins and no losses with 2 games remaining in this playoff round. Sam looking for front bench seat Three hundred at the Durham Durham East Progressive Conservative Conservative Association nomination nomination meeting last Thursday Thursday gave their total support to Sam Cureatz as their standard standard bearer in the forthcoming March lpth Ontario election. Cureatz is seeking his second term as member in the legislature for Durham East. Cureatz, a 32 year old Newcastle lawyer, won the riding in the 1977 election by a narrow margin over Doug Moffatt, NDP incumbent. ' In the, 1981 election Cureatz faces Jim Potticary for the liberals and Bruce McArthur, NDP, both residents and active in politics in Oshawa. Cureatz in his acceptance speech on Thursday evening at the Courtice High School said he had asked for the job, had enjoyed the job and wanted to keep the job. He said he had worked hard, had made some mistakes but had also won some itotable victories. victories. He said two words identified him, "Sam and jobs". . "I stand by the Darlington Generating Station as a sound long range hydro project, and. I am pleased that the Premier of Ontario announced a step up in its completion," he said. Cureatz said even Sir Adams Beck's dream of hydro at cost was criticized by the skeptics of his day.
