•4-Ofono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 1st, 1981 Orono Tykes Champions Roughley Insurance Novice i. - The Tykes participated in another tournament on Saturday, March 28th, in, Mindèn, The first game the boys played St: Paul's Church team from Peterborough. Jason Brachvogel scored the first goal of the game, passed along by Greg Hooper and Jarrett Prescott. Then St. Paul's came back to tie it up. Kevin Roberts put Orono ahead again, slipping in a pass from Jim Partner and Cameron Esler to end the first period. Orono took charge in the second period with three unanswered goals. Greg Hooper tipped in the first one, from Ryan Marsanis and Shane Jones. Then Scott Williams got one, working well with Teddy Baker and Sean Winning. David Sheridan hustled in to slip the puck past the goalie, assists to Kent Vanderheyden and Scott Williams. Kevin Roberts ended the scoring and the game, from Cameron Esler and Jason Major. Craig Andrews played an excellent game between the pipes for Orono, this win placing them on the Championship side of the tournament. The next game was against Knox Church team. Kent Vanderheyden got the only first period goal, from Teddy Baker and Craig Andrews. The - second period scoring was started by Craig Andrews, working well with Kent Vanderheyden and Sean Winning. Then Craig scored his second of the game, this time from Jason Brachvogel and Teddy Baker, Kevin Roberts poked one in this came from jarrett Prescott and Ryan Marsanis to end the second'period. Craig Andrews got his third goal of the game, to start the third period, taking a good pass from Kent Vanderheyden and Jason Brachvogel. Then Kent got his own goal, this coming from Sean Winning and Craig Andrews. Jason Major reflected one off the goalies skate, to end the game, Orono 7 to Knox 0. Assists on the play were to Scott Williams and David Sheridan. Scott McAllister got the shut-out for Orono with his fine play. The championship game was against the Fenelon Falls team, whom Orono had beaten the week before. It was a good game all the way. Craig Andrews in goal for Orono, stopped everything that came his way, except for one. The first period saw both teams go end to end, with no scoring. Kevin Roberts slipped one between the goalies legs, to put Orono on the scoreboard in the second period. Jim Partner and Scott McAllister assisted oh the play. Before the period was over Fenelon Falls had tied it up. The third period again was well played. With must one minute left in the game Shane Jones slipped a pass ahead to David- Sheridan who made no mistakes banging it by the Fenelon Falls goalie, giving Orono the championship 2-1. The' boys were presented presented with the trophy and a gold medallion before returning home. Roughley Insurance Novice hosted a -, tournament in Orono on Friday, March , 27th. In their first game Orono met Port Hope's Hood Supply. Blaine Souch assisted by Todd Gray put Orono on the board at 7:02 of the first period. Johnathon Smith for Port Hope scored unassisted at 4:38 to tie the game. The second period remained scoreless with some good end to end plays. Shawn Hutchings for Port Hope assisted by Mike Halford scored at the 3:56 mark. Anthony Webb assisted by Blaine Souch and Todd Gray scored at 3:14 to tie. As Orono scored the first goal this put them in the A.division. Orono next met Tim's Rental from Bowmanville defeating them 4-0. Steve Van Der Schee scored assisted by Anthony Webb and Mike Goodmurphy to take the lead at the 7:00 mark in the first period. In the second period Orono scored three goals. Brent Osmond assisted by Anthony Webb and Blaine Souch, and Anthony Webb scoring two goals with assists going to Todd Gray, Blaine Souch and Jason Burnham. The third period remained scoreless. scoreless. For their third and final game Orono came up against Oshawa North. Oshawa scored the first goal then at the 2:31 mark Blaine Souch tied it up with assists going to Anthony Webj) and Todd Gray. In the second period Brent Osmond scored' assisted by Todd Gray and Blaine Souch. Blaine Souch scored assisted by Anthony Webb. Oshawa scored to make it 3-2. , Oshawa scored again early in the third to tie the game. Todd Gray scored assisted by Anthony Webb and Mike Goodmurphy tp take the lead. At the 3:29 mark Oshawa tied it up. At the 1:53 mark Anthony Webb scored assisted by Blaine Souch and Todd Gray to win the game. Mr. Harvey Partner who sponsored the tournament presented the A championship championship trophy to Mike Goodmurphy, representative of the Orono team. A great way to end a good year of hockey. Special thanks to all the parents, coaches and fans who supported the team throughout the year. Semi-Finals 9 thriller Tennant Fuel Atoms On Thursday, March 26th the Tennant Fuel O.M.H.A. Atoms travelled to Bowmanville to participate in the Pine- ridge tournament. Orono 3, Woodstock 2 The first game saw the local boys come up against Woodstock and come away with a hard fought 3-2 win. In the first period Orono went ahead 2-0 oh goals by Brian Hill assisted by Jan Vanderheyden Vanderheyden and David Bailey, then Ted Gaudet with a beautiful unassisted end to end rush. (Nice effort Ted). The second period saw Woodstock come back to tie the game 2-2 on a pair of goals by Christian Thomas. In the third period both teams had many excellent scoring chances finally with 6:04 left in the game Stuart Irwin with some great effort put Orono ahead with the assist going to Brian Çoodwin. With the win Orono advanced to the championship round. Special mention to Brian Hill, Stuart Irwin and Ted Gaudet for an excellent effort. Orono 1, Kitchener 5 The second game saw Orono come up against a powerful team of all 10 year olds from Kitchener. Although the local boys gave it all they had they could not handle the Kitchener club. Scoring the lone Orono goal was Kevin Mumford assisted by Brian Hill. Orono opened the scoring at 11:16 of the first period. Steve Stec scoring assisted by Kirk Carr and Ken Farrow. Orono held the lead until 9:40 of the second period when Thornton tied the score. The third period was scoreless with 8:46 remaining when Charlie'Forbes scored the winner assisted by Ted Oster and; Mark Lake. Final score 2-1 for OronÔ,. Sunday, March 29th Thornton came to Orono with Orono only needing a tie to win the series. Orono started fast in this game scoring at 10:04 of the first period. Ken farrow got the goal froth Dennis Klawitter and Steve Stec. Orono went ahead 2-0 at 9:06 of y the first period.' Kirk Carr scored from Steve Wood. With 12 seconds left in the first period Orono went ahead 3-0 on a goal by Kirk Carr unassisted. • Thornton came back in the second period with 3 unanswered goals to tie the game. In the third period with 1:17 left Ted Oster scored what proved to be the winner from Ken Farrow. This put Orono into the Ontario Finals, after a very exciting series in which all the boys gave a good team effort. Special mention should be made of Bob Zych's performance in goal which was outstanding. Notice will be given when the next series start so come out and support our guys. Midgets ih Qntario finals Jeff Martin, goals against average 2.69 Jeff Graham, goals against average 2.89 Orono opened their series against Grand Valley , Midgets in Orono on Monday, March 30th and came out on the short end of à 7-2 score. , • Grand Valley scored the first goal, Orono came back to tie thé score on .à goal by Ken Farrow assisted by Paul King. Grand Valley scored four goals in à mv before Paul King replied from Ted Oster* Grand Valley went on to score 2 goals to end the game.
