Sponsored by thé Durham-Worthumberland» Federal Progressive Conservative Association. We grew a lovely crop of tomatoes which we carefully planted in the spring and then to make sure that they would not rot, we bought several so called tomato cages but still we have a severe problem with the bottom^ of the almost ripe tomatoes turning ; a blackish grey color on the bottom. This is starting to rot the bottom, of the tomatg. What can we do since we sprayed the plants every other week with an insecticide and a fungicide just to keep them healthy., It sounds to me like your problems lies in the nutrients of the soil where the lack of the proper nutrients' will cause this problem. What is lacking is the chemical'Or nutrient called Calciuip. Plants require a certain amount of Calcium to properly properly produce the right product. product. One product on the market today is called Protec- tomat which is a liquid "■ calcium and can be sprayed the foliage and the tomato __.ant to give it that instant ' shot of calcium for proper fruit production. Keep in mind that the tomatoes that -e affected will probably ;ep this blemish on the bottom bottom of the fruit but it still is early enough to save the large crop whith you can expect during the next two months. We seem to have a lot of holes in the leaves of our privet hedge just as thbugh someone has punched small holes in the leaves with a toothpick. This is probably the tiny insect called the leaf hopper which has a tendancy to jump from one spot to the other eating the area where it lands as it goes along. Control Control is rather simple, just use •a splay such as Diazonon or Sevin which will kill this pest. A, lot of needles on one of the evergreens are dropping off and we ate wondering what type of insect and what type of spray we can use to clear this up. Most evergreens have a tendancy to shed their needles at least once every five years and in your case, depending on the variety, this may be exactly what is happening. happening. If this dropping of needles persists and keeps going going to the point where the ' evergreen is becoming almost bare, you probably have an insect attacking the , foliage. This is like the Red Spider which will suck the sap from the needles and cause of lot of needle drop. The best control control is a systematic insecticide such as Dutox which can be ' sprayed on the foliage arid will be absorbed by the sap stream and carried throughout the needles of the tree. Sometimes this condition condition can also be caused by the lack of plantfood. This can still be added at this time by spraying a liquid fertilizer such as Cedar Feeder or R-X-30 right on the foliage which will be absorbed quickly quickly and stop this problem. I usually spray a liquid plant- ,food together with the liquid insecticide together as a com- Ë55S «White no name ™ Club Soda, orange ginger ale or cola SHOP AND COMPARE Red & White has a OJ complete selection of L No Name S'*- products " / A 10 fl. oz. at competitive low " T tins prices. * mac & 'j .
