The new facility covers the territory territory of the Regional Municipality of Durham serving serving the communities of Uxbridge, Uxbridge, Port Perry, Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa and Bowmanville. Covering some 1400 square miles, and serving a population population of more than a quarter of a million people, it represents the "state of the art"-the most up-to-date-in tele-communications technologies. It operates three VHP frequencies, two of them in duplex mode, with a fourth VHP frequency to be installed by the end of 1981. It is hoped that this fourth frequency will handle the telemetry calls underway in the Oshawa Ambulance Service, Service, , Many new technical aids abound in this facility. Full paging for all ambulance personnel personnel in the Region is a new approach, and the ability to phone-patch has been a welcome addition to the operation. Ambulance crews from the field, or portable communication, communication, can actually contact contact any Bell Telephone subscriber by way of this new patch system. This allows the dispatcher to set up a conference conference call involving as many as 14 parties. In conjunction with these telephone communications, . an ambulance officer in the field, utilizing his portable radio, can engage, if necessary, in conference com- > munication. The effectiveness effectiveness of this system was .tested recently during a mock exercise at the Pickering nuclear power facility. The tests demonstrated that senior personnel from Health and Emergency Services across the Region could be contacted simultaneously, and that concerted and common common response result. The 60-button call director allows direct telephone communication communication by private line to all emergency and support services in the Durham Region, as well as to the Metro Toronto Ambulance Dispatch; this aids in the day- to-day movement of vehicles and patients in the eastern Metropolitan Toronto periphery. The duplex radio system itself ties together a multiplication of transmission transmission towers across the Region. An intricate display of lights on the console tells the dispatcher a vehicle is contacting him and indicates which tower is receiving the vehicle's signal strongest. This means that even though the vehicle may be 50 or 60 miles from the control centre itself, the dispatcher, by, selecting the appropiate transmission site, can contact the crew and be read strength 5. A telephone network is backed up by a complete radio network to peripheral hospitals enabling ambulance crews to transmit their patient patient care data directly to nursing nursing and medical staff. • Taping of all transactions in the facility is done on a ten-track tape machine which has built-in, fail-safe mechanisms. Should one tape recorded fail to function, the next machine will automatically commence recording, ensuring continuous continuous taping service for the facility. This new centre, enclosed by a sound absorbent robm, began operation March 27,. 1981, and is one of the many new central dispatch facilities introduced by the Ministry of Health.
