New Film Classifications Those who have been to the movies recently have probably probably noticed new symbols on the marque of their local theatre. These symbols are all part of Ontario's new regulations regulations on film classification. Movies are now divided up into four catagories-- restricted, adult accompanie- ment, parental guidance and family. Restricted movies are those which contain scenes of excessive excessive violence, abuse, horror, horror, nudity, sexual activity or use of offensive language. Movies which promote controversial controversial or anti-social lifestyles may also be restricted depending on the style and force of presentation. presentation. , Admittance to restricted 'movies is still limited to those of 18 years and over. Adult accompaniment is a new classification for movies deemed suitable for people 14 years and over. Movies in this catagory may contain limited nudity or sexual involvement, some suggestive or vulgar dialogue, coarse allusion and , language. Adult accompaniment movies may contain a certain amount of violence and nudity, nudity, but neither will be gratuitous. Any violence or nudity must be integral to the plot of the movie. The other new classification classification is parental guidance. These films may contain limited violence, romantic in- . volvement which is not sexually sexually explicit and mild use of coarse of vulgar language. While these movies are open to qll, it is left to the decision of parents whether their children may view them. The final category is family. family. These movies are suitable for people of all ages to see. The censorship and classification of films is the task of the Ontario Censor Board. The Minister in charge of the Board has established a system of rotating appointments which will allow greater community, involvement in the Censorship ' process. Film censorship in Ontario does not mean the repression of ideas or artistic expression. Rather, the Ontario Censor Board ensures that movies portraying excessive and antisocial antisocial behaviour are seen by only those mature enough to deal with the content of the presentation. I felt this explanation of classification would be helpful for families in my riding of Durham East. Kathy and I, in an endeavour to make use or some of the summer nights have taken our two boys to the local theatres, and from personal experience, 1 felt classification classification of the new categories would be helpful. Kathy and 1 both observed that there is a severe lack of family movies.
