"We Service Everything We Sell" HOTPOINT THE BEAUTIFUL APPLIANCES time he vaulted upstairs. "Kelly did you change colours colours on this cube?" "No", came the reply. "Are you sûre?" "Well, just two." Now the exists..what two. problem Possibly one of the hottest items on sale these days in the Rubik Cube and along yvith this is a number of books relating to the method of solving the puzzle. Certainly we are hoping that Santa provides us with such an item for we are going to have to have one of our own. From the little experience experience we have had with the puzzle we are sure not going to Solve it overnight. Nor are we going to buy a book to figure it out. . There must be some logic to the solution and we do feel we have made some progress. Certainly the centre square is constant or at least if its yellow on one side it is always the same colour on the direct opposite side. Further a corner corner square is always a corner square. We have to come to the conclusion there is no solution solution available by just turning the square. One, we believe, must set out a system and at least have some idea how the cube works. ; This was brought home to us a number of years ago when Harry Mercer was called called upon to fix one of the presses. He pulled up a chair beside the press and had u's explain the operation and just what should be happening. He made no move until he had a thorough knowledge of the operation of the malfunctioning malfunctioning part of the press. At this point it was a simple simple mattèr for Harry' to quickly put the press back into into operation. It was a lesson I will never forget and in fact have used it quite often sjnee that time. This logic 1 hope to apply to the Rubik Cube. Our only association with the Cube, to this point, is one given to our granddaughters, and here 1 belfeve there is a story which has given me a" few chuckles. The Rubik Cube is intriguing intriguing and the kids can often be found spinning the sections about in the hope through -some miracle at least one side will turn up with all the same colour. It becomes a habit'to spin and spin and spin. Eight year old Kelly proudly proudly presented the cube to her father a few nights âgo with one side all one colour. Even Dad was impressed to have his daughter solve a portion of the puzzle and no doubt would have seen to it that this accomplishment was brought forth at coffee break at work. Well it was then time for bed for the kids and Dad settled settled down to do his bit with the cube. His , accomplishments accomplishments are not a matter matter of solving the mysteries of the cube but in what time he can complete all sides-. Checking the time, the race against the clock was on. It would only be a matter of minutes and «all sides would be one colour. But this was not to be. The system had broken down. Try, try and try, again. Dad was having problems and in fact he was unable to get» to i he first side of one colour. After a close inspection of the cube for the umpteenth It would appear that Kelly believes ; in the theory "the end justifies the means."
