How does Environment fit in Woods, Water and Wildlife By: Ron Reid - Federation of Ontario Naturalists At a time when Canada faces the toughest winter • since the Depression, when the scramble to create jobs at , almost any price reached new heights, how do environmental environmental concerns fit in to the 1983* picture? South' of the border, the Ifeagan Administration has found one answer, by appointing appointing anti-environment bureaucrats such as James Watt- and Anne Gorsuch to dismantle' environmental regulations and chop back funding. But here in Ontario, .Premier William Davis claims that rye Will-be following a different route. In a speach to mark the 30th anniversary of the Con- sefvatioq Council of Ontario last month, Davis stressed that his , government's economic recovery program "will not be at the risk of environmental environmental short cuts." In defending Ontario's record in thé environmental field, the Premier noted that this program program was not achieved by adopting a short-sighted . view, allowing only economic interests to prevail, and he promised that his government had no intention of doing so now. Despite this commitment» the Premier's specific announcements announcements were somewhat less reassuring. He announced announced once again that the chairman chairman and terms of reference of an Environmental Assessment Assessment Advisory Committee would be established "shortly", "shortly", which is a remarkably similar promise to that given in June 1981 and several times since. Mr. Davis did drop a hint of a major environmental 1 issue to come in the 1980's. Referring to "pressure for access access to Great Lakes water by drought-stricken southern states," he raised the spectre of gigantic engineered diversion diversion projects to siphon off Canadian water. He suggested suggested that the governments charged with making these "extremely difficult" decisions decisions on water use will need to depend on an informed and committed public, especially to raise environmental environmental concerns. Perhaps it is issues like this, and like acid rain, with broad-ranging environmental and political implications, that are encouraging the Ontario Ontario government to hold to its environmental commitments. commitments. But it is also a high degree of public support that sways any political decisions. Natural Resources Minister AÎan Pope, for instance, recently decided to personally hold open houses across Ontario Ontario to hear views on his parks and land use plans. He was swamped by hundreds of interested citizens attending l)is meetings, presenting dozens of briefs and submissions. submissions. Even in tough economic times, the people of Ontario obviously still care deeply about the management management of their natural environment, environment, and that message seems to be getting through to government-. ■ft FRUIT MARKET • Offers To You Fresh Crisp Macintosh, Red & Golden Delicious, Mutsue, Ruçset & Spy Apples, Frbm $3.95 Up Vi Bushel Flemish Beauty And Bose Pears * Fresh Eggs & Potatoes n in .inimi.ffli.wMMUBHniiH.'in iinltii i ii.nn.
