Allan Lawrence, M.P. * (Durham-Northiumberland) Realistically, to achieve a general election victory the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada must have massive support in two regions of the country: the west and Ontario. To win the leadership of the party, a unilingual English-speaking- candidate must have the same: very large support from Ontario and from western Canada. I am deeply indebted to many friends, to colleagues in the House, and to my own constituency members for their intensive canvassing across the country during the past three weeks, so that I could assess my potential . support as a leadership candidate. candidate. It is apparent that I could have a respectable showing from our federal caucus, from members of provincial legislatures, as well as from the youth and student student groups. From constituency delegations delegations geographically, I am convinced 1 would have a fair degree of support from the Maritimes, good support from urban Ontario, and a heavy endorsement from rural and northern Ontario -at least as much, if not Counc. Hubbard said she was opposed to the telephone poll conducted by Mayor Rickard over the week-end as to whether or not the Darlington Darlington arena could remain open for the Minor Bantams to play the final game. She said such a matter should be dealt with in the normal fashion in council. 1 She said in conversation she 'had been told that the team management felt the Bowmanville arena was in such disrejtadr that they did not want to invite anyone to it. The içe surface was too small and there was no hot water. The ice has been taken out of the Darlington arena, in which arena the Minor Bantams Bantams have been playing thdr games. Bud Fanning, director of recreation, said he doubted they could have held ice in the Darlington arena and felt they had gone out of their way to assist the Bowmanville team by offering offering the facilities at the Bowmanville Arena. Counc. Hubbard said she was not impmmed with the telephone peril over the i ter, Orono Board plans further decorating The Orono. Town Hall Board met Monday afternoon afternoon when Consideration was igiven to further improvements improvements 1 in the hall in Orono. Monies are available from federal and provincial work programs and in consultation with the Department of Recreation of the Town of Newcastle it is expected that some $1,000.00 could be available for the Orono Hail. The board is considering refurbishing floors and completing completing additional painting in the hall. The board expects to have an answer early next week as to acceptance of the program. program. more, than would any other declared or undeclared Ontario Ontario candidate. But I was disturbed at the resentment -- if not hostility -- that exists among a large number of delegates and potential delegates in the west towards any "eastern" candidate candidate or potential candidate. And by "eastern", they generally mean a candidate from Ontario. That feeling may or may not be logical, traditional or emotional, but it is there! And it exists in spite of the reality that, to win a general election in 1984 or 1985, the P. C. Party is going going to have to win heavily in Ontario. I have no interest in being a regional candidate, nor in contesting the leadership to raise my personal, profile. I would only be interested in being a Candidate if there was enough demonstrated preconvention preconvention national support to permit a close fight after a vigorous campaign. Under the present circumstances circumstances } do not see that happening. Therefore, after much personal agonizing and deliberation and with 'the benefit of much • effort by others, I am announcing that I .will not be a candidate for (Continued page 4) Most improved senior skater Catherine- Mudd, a senior she was presented with the member of the Orono Figure Most Improved àward for the Skating Club was pleasantly seqior skaters.
