/ i ^ Celebrates 50th Anniversary Photo by Larry Hancock An Open House was held Saturday, April 16, 1983 at the Oddfellows Hall in Orono to celebrate the 50th Wedding Wedding Anniversary of Fosetta and Alf Pigott. Friends and relatives visited the Bride and Groom of 50 years between 2-5 in the afternoon. Family members attending were from Brantford, Hamilton, Scarborough, New Liskeard, London, Port Perry, Hastings and surrounding surrounding area. Many cards, gifts and floral arrangements were received. Among the tributes received were plaques from Prime Minister Trudeau, Premier Bill Davis, Hon. Allan Lawrence M.P., Sam Cureatz M.P.P., Mayor Garnet Rickard, Governor General Ed Schreyer and leader of the opposition Erik Neilson. An enjoyable afternoon of reminiscing was enjoyed by the honoured couple and their guests. Lunch and tea was served by the Heather Rebekah Lodge 334. The party was given by their daughter and son-in-law Glory and Fay Adams of Orono, and by grandson and his wife Don and Ann Adams of Port Perry along with a family portrait. Block Parents act for Orono students May 1 to May 7 has been* declared Block 1 Parent Week by the Town of Newcastle. To kick off the week, the Town of Newcastle Block Parents^have invited the well known children's artist', Eric Nagler, to perform. Nagler will be in concert at the Bowmanville High School auditorium on Monday, .May 2nd', at 6:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at The Toy Box on King Street in Bowmanville Bowmanville or by contacting Janice Slocombe 623-4278 at a cost of $2.50 each. ' On Tuesday, May 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. the regular .monthly .monthly Block Parent Committee meeting will be held in Court Room 1 at the Police Building on Church Street in Bowmanville, Everyone is welcome. Arrangements are being ihade for the placement of five new Block Parent Community Community road signs on Wednesday, May 4th at Mitchell's Mitchell's Corners, Orono, Bowmanville and Newcastle. A special evening has been planned for Thursday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. At the'request ; of a Block Parent, Doreen Robertson from Outreach has agreed to speak on the subject "How to Street Proof Your, Child". The general ■public is invited to attend this meeting, which will be held at the Police Building on Church Street in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. T» wind up Block Parent Week, on Saturday, May 7th, the Bowmanville Library will show the film "What's a Block Parent" and hand out Block Parent bookmarks to the children. Ontario Hydro '84 rate proposals Ontario Hydro Chairman Milan Nastich has outlined . Hydro's 1984 rate proposal to Robert Welch, Ontario Minister of Energy. The proposal, required under the Ontario Energy -d Act, is outlined in the » Minister. It is the first in a series of steps undertaken each year to establish new rates. Following review of the V >ched letter to the (Continued page 4) Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, April 27, 1983-3 Eduaction Week at the Pines Sr. Education Week is celebrated by all of the schools in Ontario, between April 24-30, 1983. The theme "Education for Tomorrow" is exemplified by various activities activities held at The Pines. A puppet play about education in the future called "The Fun They Had" will be presented to the younger students of the surrounding schools. Science Fair displays, Think Bowl, Participation, and, of course, our famous, fabulous Music Night are only some of the activities found at The Pines this week. Good music and good entertainment can be found at The Pines. Our annual Music Night is held on April 27 at 7:30 p.m. This year's theme is "Fame" and it is about music and dance made famous throughout the years. The admission is 75 cents for senior citizens and students, $1.00 for adults, and $3.00 for a family. When interviewed, interviewed, Mrs. Prole, our Music Teacher, and the organizer of Music Night, said, "This year's Music Night should be really great with such acts as "The Good Ship Lollipop" and "Arthur's Girls." ' During our annual Science Fair, many excellent projects were exhibited throughout The Pines. However, we would like to congratulate the top three winners of both Grade Seven and Grade Eight. Elspeth Patterson's project "Egg to Chick" received first place for the Grade Seven competition. Second Second place went to Heidi Meszaros for "Plant Rests". And a tie for third place was received by Heather Hoy's and Michelle Riddle's "Recycling" and Dodi. Brough's "Teeth", v Grade Eight projects were done just as well'with Tammy Northam and Erin Windatt's "Evolution "Evolution of Man" winning while a close second was won by Paul Mendonca and Trevor Kortekaas for "Natural .Energy". Third place went to .Peter Vohsemer who did his "project on "The Eye". Mr. Massie, Science Teacher at The Pines, feels that this is the best Science Fair ever. This year The Pines was represented at the Trent Science Fair by Erin Windatt's and Tammy Nor- * tham's "Evolution of Man" and Peter Vohsemer's "The Eye". While no prizes were awarded, The Pines' spirit of competition was well represented. On May 10, 1983 at 8:00 p.m. at The Pines School, there is a free 'community concert performed by the Peterborough Civic Band. The students of The Pines are invited to sit in during certain songs and play along with the band. All are welcome! During the past few weeks, a group of students have been involved in Think Bowl. Instructed Instructed by Mr. ■ Prole and Mr. Fortier, two teams of four students compete in decision making to see who can solve the problem the best way. For practice, they used special booklets containing containing problems for which they were to find the best solution. Also they have been practising practising brainstorming by writing •down as many ideas about a question as possible. An example example is: to list as many things that you can think of that go shh! We wish them all the best of luck on April 28, 1983 in Cobourg. Coming up on May 3, 1983 is a Computer Wizardry Workshop at Courtice Secondary Secondary School. The students learn how to program computers. computers. The following five students will be attending the workshop: Kevin ■ Riseborough, Leslie Bar- raball, Trevor Kortekaas, Leanne Kent, and Peter Vohsemer. These students are very anxious to start and, will surely learn a great deal. : Mr. Moore, our principal,' has been preparing a number of students for the County Mathematics Contest. ■ This will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 1983 at The Pines. The results, after the one hour test is over, will be sent to Cobourg. We wish them all the best of luck! The school's gymnastics team has been practising for the past few weeks getting in top shape for the Westèm Area Gymnastics Competition Competition which is annually held at The Pines. This year's meet will be on Thursday, April 28, 1983. Soccer will be getting started with a big kick at The Pines in the next couple of weeks. Mr. Massie is coaching our boys' soccer team and Mr. Prole will be coaching the girls' team. The final activity for the house league teams will be Slow-Pitch. Teams will be formed in May for a tournament tournament in the month of June.
