( SPORTS ) Orono No. 3 Girls gallop over the Bowmanville Rams Ladies' Lobb-Ball Standings Town of Newcastle ORONO #3 POSTS ANOTHER WIN Orono #3 galloped to vie-, lory over the Bowmanville Rams in Thursday's game at Kirby School as they managed managed to put it all together. Kim Lycett had a good night behind the plate, but only managed to connect for 1/4, as did Jennifer' Montgomery, Montgomery, Kristine Howes, Michele Alic, and Kim Woodward. Christy Flintoff made some good plays at shortstop and connected with 2/4 as did Leanne Mutton, who made some key "outs" at second, and Leanne Reid. Toni Howes connected with 3/4 and Teresa Kennedy connected connected with 4/4, as did Dana Shetler, Leanne Lycett, and Karen Talstna, the last three of whom cashed in on horneruns, scoring several runs and ensuring the victory. The girls played excellent offensive ball as well as defensive. They were in full command of the game from the first inning and never once looked back. Enthusiasm Enthusiasm was contagious amongst the team members. The parents who attended the game enjoyed the action and encouraged the girls in their efforts. Mom's Kitchen Tyke soccer team win first game played For the first time in. recent years, Orono has a Tyke soccer soccer team sponsored by Mom's Kitchen. None of the team have played organized soccer before but they have been keen and impressive in their practises. The first game of the year was played against Bowmanville Bowmanville Pankhurst on June 14 at Knox Christian School. The Orono players • performed well and came out ahead 4-1. Scorers were Jamie Shetler (2), Peter Kelcey and Scott Ransberry. The temperature was near 30 celcius as the two teams battled through the first 45 minutes of play. Woodview's skill as a passing team showed Orono up and Woodview led by a score of three to one at the end of the first half. When the second half was Underway Orono began to show ' their ability and stamina and gradually overpowered overpowered Woodview. Three unanswered goals by Orono in the final stages of the game were enough to extend Orono's wins to two games, this was their first victory away from home. Paul Henry scored a hat trick and Ken Bailey scored one goal. Orono's next game is this Thursday against Zion at Clarke High School which should prove to be quite a contest. Orono Tyke soccer club now have a three and one record I would like to bring you ' up-to-date. Our boys are do- ihg very well in there games with stiff competition from teams in Bowmanville and surrounding area. Practises seem to be going very well. Of course, there are a few ■ complaints when wé run the track but all in all no problems. problems. , We have a three win ancj, one loss record. Orono atoms show stamina wear down oppostion for win Orono Atoms Team 1 learned an important lesson on Wednesday evening at Court ice High School. Bowmanville D & R fjports limited Orono to nil shots in the first half while testing the Orono goalie, Cameron Es 1er, several times. He stopped stopped all shots but one, saving face for a badly outplayed Orono team. However, in the second half the Orono team learned that Coach McAllister's lough calisthenics serve a purpose. Their superior condition condition allowed them to I urn the tables on the Bowmanville Bowmanville team, allowing them no shots on Cameron. Come out and support our Orono teams this summer Jam Session of Good Taste Strawberry Orange Jam 2 large (quart) containers strawberries 6 cups (1.5 Litres) sugar 1 tablespoon (15 rpL) grated . orange rind 2 tablespoons (25 mL) orange'flavored liqueur Wash and hull strawberries. strawberries. Place berries in a preserving kettle over medium heat. Add Orange rind. Crush berries as they heat. When berries boil, add sugar. Boil vigorously for 5 minutes. Continue cooking, stirring frequently to pre- vent burning, for 15 minutes and jam is thick. Remove from heat. Skim and stir, Add orange liqueur. Pour into hot sterilized jars and seal. Makes 2 quarts or 2 Litres. While jams and jellies are usually grouped together there is an important difference between the two products: Jam is made from whole crushed fruit while jelly is made from fruit juice. Grape Jelly 3 boxes powdered fruit pectin pectin 9 cups (2 Litres) bottled grape juice • 10-12 cups (2 kg) sugar Scald 12 8-otince (250 mL) jelly glassds. In a large saucepan mix ,'pectjn with ' grape juice. Stir over high heat until mixture corties tc? at hjtrd boil. Add sugar. Boil hard 1'minute, stirring constantly. constantly.
