i llBMÉSi Hohour the late Rena Waddell Show and Sale One of the most outstanding outstanding show and sale of local art takes place this week-end at The Art Loft, Dikadel Farms, east of highway 115 ■ from the New Dutch Overt' Restaurant. The R.D. Morton's in promoting promoting this unique venture ' that takes place in the farm barn converted to a gallery will greet visitors along with other consignors this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The gallery has had successful showings and sales ' for the past two years and through these have built up a reputation reputation of a quality show and side. Artists taking part in the show include Amy Morton's prints, R. D.: Morton's oils, Don . Staples watercolours, Douglas Tail's pen and ink drawings, Michael Clay's sculpture, Ronald T. Barber's woodcarvings, Bill Rowland's pottery and work by. the Country weavers, Elizabeth Bunton, Karen Halmimert, Gwen Hook and Margarete King. The show and sale is open Friday 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Doubts about Candu safety - Coffee and punch was served at an Open House, in honour of the late Rena Waddell, at the Clarke Public Library in Orono on July 28 th. The Open House was in recognition of the generous bequest to the library by Mrs. Waddell through which the library has been able to improve improve its services to the community! community! Recent acquisitions by the library . include the addition of an electronic typewriter, a new photo copier, desk as well as a video disc player and discs. Attending the Open House along with other members of the community were; Miss Alma Cuttell, a long-time friend of Mrs. Wdddell, a cousin, Mrs. Marjorie McGee who above views some of the library features wiin librarian, Madeline Hadley and Newcastle Library Board member Mrs. Janet Pollitt. The shutdown in ' Pickering is'due to the leak of radiated heavy water. Prior to the* problems in Pickering, Norman Rubin, a researcher on,nuclear issues with Enejrgy Probe, a national national non-profit organization organization concerned with energy policy, authored an article in the Toronto Star on July 16th with the titlè "Doubts about Candu safety". ABOVE THE CROWDS A new feature has been added this year for the annual Orono Fair Tractor Pull being held on Monday, September 5 th. The Re-Max Cornestone Realty Ltd. balloon will be on the grounds and weather permitting rides will be available to fly above the crowd. A portion of the revenue from the venture venture will go toward promotion of the Orono Fair. "Come Fly With Us" on September 5th. 1 ORONO HOCKEY STARTING EARLY ' It is the intention of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association to make an early start for hockey this coming hockey season. In speaking with Gord Lowery he points .out that ice making will start at the Orono Arena about a week after the Orono Fall Fair. This is about two to two and a half weeks earlier than in other years. The Athletic plan,to hold two weeks of power skating for members of all, teams under, the sponsorship of the Athletic. Each team will have ten sessions in power skating prior to the opening of regular hockey practice. A professional instructor is to be hired to teach power skating. FLOWER AND VEGETABLE SHOW ON THURSDAY The Orono Horticultural Society are holding their annual annual fall flower and vegetable show this Thursday evening in- the basement of the Orono Uhited Church. Plan to view this most interesting show where local citizens display the best from their gardens. FALL FAIR PRIZE LIST AVAILABLE The Durham Central Agricultural Society Fall Fair Prize List is now available listing all competitive classes and sections that are available for competition at the fair held in Orono, Thursday, September 8th to Sunday, September 11th. Competitions with cash awards are open in various horse classes, cattle, sheep, poultry, rabbits', 4-H Clubs, grain and hay, needlecrafts, vegetables, fruits, plants and flowers, ' -mestic science, art, junior department and as well features v school children. * . * • Tobacco crops totalled by hail A freak hail storm late Monday Monday afternoon totally ruined some tobacco crops east of Orono and as well did excessive excessive damage to apple crops in' the QVono-Newcastle Village area. Hail in the Newcastle Village area was reported as large as golf balls.. In speaking with \ John Finley of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Bowmanville he said the tjarms of .Pl.easance, Tax and Zoelman east of Orono were the hardest hit by the storm with almost total damage to the crops. The farm of Henry Aiken east of Orono but north of the other farms and at the Taunton Road may be able to salvage some of his crop. Damage to apples was excessive excessive in some cases especially especially ground the Newcastle Village area arid will greatly reduce the value of the crop. Early apples will be hardest hit. In Orono the hail storm lasted for a couple of minutes with hail about the size of a good size pea. In the Hampton area reports note the breaking of window glass with . hail the size of golf balls. Davis started sewing as a hobby some four years ago Rubin 'States "The safety of Canada's Candu nuclear reactor system - popularly thought to be one of its greatest selling features - may in fact be its Achilles' heel". Rubin points to evidence that indicates that safety concerns concerns have blocked Candu sales in the LJnited States, Britian and most other European European countries. It is a fact that other countries have not picked up on the Candu over the last few years and it brings brings into line there must be a reason other than the' cost of such an installation.
