If- the School Crossing Guard system is to be effective cooperation cooperation must be forthcoming forthcoming from three people, the School Crossing Guard, the Motorist apd the Student, all have responsibilities.- The School Crossing Guard is authorized to stop traffic, by the Highway Traffic Traffic Act, for the directing of the movement of children across a highway. In the Region of Durham all aduit " School Crossing Guards, have been trained to follow, the same procedure when assisting children to cross the roadways. Prior to walking on the roadway the guard shall hold up the familiar hand held stop sign and blow a whistle, to stop approaching traffic. The Guard then walks .to the centre of the road and, when all traffic has stopped, blows the whistle a second time, to allow the children to cross. Oncy the Students have safely crossed the roadway and are safely off that roadway roadway the Guard returns to the side of the road, with stop sign held up. Upon reaching thé side of the road the Guard lowers. the stop sign and blows the whistle, for the third time to allow vehicular traffic to proceed. The duties of the motorist or driver, of any vehicle, including including a bicycle are laid out in the Highway Traffic Act. Where the hand held stop sign is displayed by a School Crossing Guard, a driver approaching approaching the sign shall stop, before reaching the crossing. The driver must remain stopped until the students and the Guard have reached the curb safely. ■ The children crossing the roadway at these locations must use the following rules. They must stand well back from the curb or edge of the road, and behind the School Crossing Guard, they must stand quietly and with- no pushing 'or shoving. They must wait until the Guard has reached the centre of< the roadway and blows the whistle whistle for the second time. The children then walk, not run, across the road, watching for traffic at all times. If all three, the School Crossing Cjpard, the drivers of all vehicles and the children, follow the above procedures our many crossings crossings with School Crossing Guards will be accident free. Co-operation, Courtesy and Caution are required by all people involved.
