$5 million contract awarded Hwy. 115 With the awarding of a conn tract last week by the Ministry of Transportation and Communication to Bot Construction of Oakville work is to start on January 3rd, 1984 on the reconstruction reconstruction of Highway 115-35 north from the CPR bridge. -Signs are already being placed along the construction route and equipment is being moved in for the January 3rd beginning. The contract is for work to be undertaken from the CPR bridge north through the third and fourth line intersection and further north from the four line some 1500 metres" (just south of the soth entrance entrance into Orono.) The contract was let for an amount of $4,929,^34.56 which will include the cost of widening the CPR bridge, completing underpasses at the third and fourth line road as well as rebuilding, paving apd constructing the cement barrier dividing the four- lane highway. The widening of the CPR railway bridge is to start almost imitiediately as will the conslrcution of the necessary culverts along the 3 kilometer stretch. The Lovekin bridge south of the Highway 2 - Highway 115-35'intersection is also included included in the contract. Realignment Realignment of the third and fhur line roads will also be undertaken to adapt to the intersection with Highway 115-35. Work is expected to be completed sometime in the summer of 1985. In speaking with John Cameron of the Ministry he said he did not know when a further contract would be let to continue with the reconstruction of Highway 115-35 north from the south entrance to Orono. ' - , The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Education have given approval to a late French Immersion program program by a vote of 7 to 5. The provision of late French Immersion Immersion depends on interest of parents and students who are to be contacted prior to the Opening of school in September of 19841 The Board gave their approval approval that the. program would be offered in the three areas in the board subject to an enrolment of 28 students in eachpf the areas in the initial initial year. In the western breathe program program would be offered in the M.J. Hobbs Senior Public School at Hampton. ' Further the program in 1984-85 would be offered to grade. 6 students with a continuing continuing introduction in suc cessive years. It has been pointed out that it would not increase transportation costs but that no new such costs would be incurred without approval from the board. The late French Immersion program would provide half a day instruction in french and a half day ip english. Grade six students have had an introduction to french through the curriculum in grade four and five. Orono fitness centre to proceed in 1984 The Orono Fitness Centre proposed during the summer by Wolfrarii Klose of R.R. 1 Orono is now expected to be a reality in the fall of 1984. In speaking with Wolfram Klose he said the response to his advertising earlier this year as to the Orono Fitness , Centre; Was such that he now is' finalizing plans for the beginning of construction in the spring of 1984. His plans now include a squash court and two racquet ball courts as well as a large Jounge, dancercize body fitness equipment. Klose states the project is to be larger than first anticipated and will require a new building. He expects it will take up to two months to get the necessary municipal approvals. approvals.
