4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 14, 1987 Tennant Fuel Atoms Consolation winners On December 29, 1986 the Qrono Tennant Fuels Atoms participated in the Ops Tournament and came away with the consolation championship championship for their effort. The first game was played against the Bowmanville Toro "B" squad, and was a very close hard fought match won by the Toros 3-1. The opening period saw even play up and down the ice with each team ' scoring a goal. Bowmanville opened the scoring with Mike Suess; taking passes from Chris McCarthy and Jamie Brake, but Orono answered back less than two minutes later on an unassisted goal by Trevor Lomax. The play remained even for the rest of the game however the Toros got the bouhce'of the puck in their favour and scored once more in each period. This loss relegated the Tennant Fuels Atoms to the "B" side of the tournament and to a match up against Oshawa Black Hawks for their second game. Orono came out flying to take command of the play and tallied eight unanswered goals to register their first shutout, 8-0. At the 3:36 mark of the first period Ben Deremo set up Stephen Shetler for Orono's first goal. Two minutes later Aaron Staples and Jeremy Brace combined on passes to Daryl Reid who blasted in the second second goal. The third goal was an unassisted rush by Orono defenceman Jason Hansen with only only 16 seconds remaining in the first period. The second period saw three , more goals scored by Orono. Daryl Reid scored his second of the game unassisted, then Chris Yeo scored on passes from Michael Landers and Trevor Lomax. The last goal of the period was ah effort by Jean Paul Tousignant assisted by Chris Yeo. Aaron Staples'picked up his second point of the game when he scored unassisted to lead off the third period. Chris Yeo finished off « the scoring when he capitalized on passes from Brandon Ovenden and Michael Landers. Although not very busy the Orono netminder Jarrett Aus had to make a few difficult saves to preserve his shutout. The final game for the "B" * championship matched Orono Tennant Tennant Fuels with a hustling team from Little Britain.' The Little Britain team got off to a good start with a lot of pressure in the Orono end and a 2-0 lead before OronO was able to respond with a goal by Ben Deremo from Jasbn Hansen. The second period saw Little Little Britain again take a two goal lead when Chris Cairns potted an unassisted goal. This must have stirred stirred the Orono squad as Orono came back with four goals for their own in the period to take the lead 5-3. Goal scoring was by Trevor Lomax from Chris Yeo and Paul Woods, Jean-Paul Tousignant from Chris Yeo and Trevor Lomax, Jean-Paul again from Trevor Lomax and Paul Woods and by Paul Flintoff unassisted. In the third period Trevor Lomax took only 16 seconds to convert a Jean-Paul Tousignant pass into a goal. Little Britain answered back with one more before Stephen Shetler and Daryl Reid finished off the scoring with assists to Ben Deremo and Aaron Staples respectively. respectively. Continued pressure by Stephen Stadelmann with hard drives, excellent excellent goaltending by Chad Maartense and Jarrett Aus and a total team effort earned the team the trophy and "B" Championship. Toro Canada Day Exhibition Game Orono vs. Toros Orono Tennant Fuels Atoms again faced the Toro Atom "B" team on January 3, 1987 for an exhibition exhibition match-up. This game saw the Toros jump to a 2-0 lead after two periods of play. Orono came back in the third period with goals by Stephen Stadelmann from Chris Yeo and Paul Flintoff and an unassisted goal by Paul Flintoff to tie the score 2-2. With the rules of the game being that, the team scoring scoring first would be called the winner in any tied final score, Orono pulled their goalie late in the game to try to break the 2-2 tie. This backfired and allowed the Toros to put in an empty net goal and win with a 3-2 score. The Tennant Fuels Atoms met the Bowmanville Toros again on January 7th for their final regular season match. This was again won by the Toros 5-2. Each game between between these teams has been very dose with hot goaltending and the bounce of the puck determining the outcome. This night both were on the Toro side, wlfere the Toro pucks seemed to find the net yet the Orono puck hit goal posts, sticks and the goalie when it seemed certain certain to be a goal. Orono did jump ahead with the opening goal when Trevor Lomax fired home a pass from J.P. Tousignant Tousignant and Chris Yeo. The Toros came back with four goals to make it .4-1 before Jean-Paul Tousignant poked in a Chris Yeo shot. Bowmanville Toros finished off the scoring with only 22 seconds to play to make the final score 5-2 for the Toros. Orono M&A Pee Wees on a winning streak Orono 7 - Bowmanville 1 ' On December 20 the Matthews and Associate OMHA Peewees travelled to Darlington Arena to take on the Bowmanville Toro Peewees. The end result was a 7-1 win for the Orono lads. The first period was a see-saw battle with good end-to-end action. With just two seconds remaining in the period Andy Taylor got on the scoreboard with a sizzling slapshot from the point that the Bowmanville Bowmanville goalie had no chance on at all. David "Shifty" Sheridan set up the play when he won the face off cleanly. The second period saw Bowmanville Bowmanville tie the match up at the 10:09 mark. At this point the game became a rough, hard hitting affair with the penalty' box being loaded up with players. At the 11:35 mark David Sheridan and Greg White received double roughing penalties with Tyler Gibson being ejected for being third man in. David made up for the lost ice tinie and flew out of the penalty box, picked up a n * ce P ass ! rom Craig Nemis. David then split the defense and found the far corner with a nice wri's* s * 10t - Just minutes ! a ! cr Granny Hart wig blasted hofne ,a high shot to the glove sidP 1° U P lh. c count to 3-1 for Orono. This goal was set up by Dustin Reid find Bradley Minnis. The Orono I cam was reduced to just nine skaters at the 7:53 mark when Andy Taylor and Brad Johnston squared off. Both players were given game misconducts for their fisticuffs. Scott McAllister put Orono ahead 4-1 with just seconds remaining remaining in the period. Scott tipped in David Sheridan's pass after Craig Nemis set Dave up with a nice relay. Orono took a 4-1 lead into the dressing room at the end of the second second period. It looked like they might be in trouble entering the third period going going with just three defensemen. But then Orono dug in and actually outplayed their opponents in the last stanza. Goalie Shawn • Hardy held them in there early with some sharp saves until his teammates got rolling. Jim Partner put his team ahead 5-1 when he combined with Scott McAllister on a fine 2-way play. At the 2:20 mark Dustin Reid found the top corner with a backhander after receiving a nice pass from Cameron Esler. Scott McAllister notched his second goal (3 points) with just 20 seconds to go in the contest. Jeff Hartwig and David Sheridan (4 points) did the spade work to earn the assists. A tired Jason Major was a tower of strength behind the blue line to help the cause. PEEWEES win 3-1 On January 3, 1987 the Orono boys travelled to Port Perry for their first game of the New Year, A much improved Port Perry team came out flying, scoring first at the 13:02 mark of the first period. .Orono's defense and goalie Shawn Hardy managed to ho|d off their attack for the remainder of the period and carried on for the rest of the game. At the 3:21 mark of the second period. Orono started their attack, with Davey Sheridan winning a face off in his own end and starting Jimmy Jimmy Partner off on a break away. Jim's low shot lo the stick side tied the game at one apiece. The rest.of the period went scoreless. Orono went ahead at the 11:31 mark of the third on an unassisted goal by Dustin Reid. Dusty showed us all thiat he still has the .moves from "86". At the 7:12 mark Orono struck again. This time Andy "The Cannon" Cannon" Taylor drove the puck into the goalie's-pads with such force that it slipped through crossing the red line. Again the play was started by some good heads-up play by David Sheridan. The whole team played well and should be happy with the outcome. Good luck for the rest of '87 boys. P.S. The big "C" proved that when the goin' gets rough the rough can get goin'. ORONO PEEWEES TIE RED WINGS AND SHUTOUT BLACKHAWKS On January 5th the Matthews & Hill Peewees hosted the Oshawa Ljttle NHL Red Wings. It was a close checking affair with both teams notching 3 goals. The Orono lads scored first on a goal by Andy "Bopm Boom" Taylor assisted by Bush Pig Minnis and Flash Reid. The home team increased the lead at the 2:30 mark of the second period with a score by Dustin Flask Reid from "Boom-Boom" Tavlo. and "Beaner" Hartwig. However the Red Wings fought back to tie the score by the end of the second period. The third period saw both teams score once, the Orono marker coming from Scott "Bagpipes" McAllister assisted by Tyler "Hot Dog" Gibson and Dave "Piggy" Sheridan. Orono again hosted a Little NHL team on Saturday, January 10th. The Black Hawks had defeated the Orono squad in their last encounter in the championship game of the Manvers tournament. However in this duel the Orono team won by a score of 4-0 because of their excellent excellent team defensive play. Coach Major brought up two players namely Darcy Duncan and Jamie Ball from the Tri-County Team because of the absence of (Continued page 5) NOTICE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD The Library Board is forming a steering committee for the Library Service Needs Assessment Study to be done in 1987, The Board will invite three citizens (one from each ward of the Town if possible) to serve on this Committee with Board appointees.
