I 8-Ôrono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 20, 1987 Sam Cureatz Durham East THRONE SPEECH The promises included in this Throne Speech fall into three broad categories: those which simply expand expand existing programs: those which involve review, study and further consideration; and new programs programs which create more bureaucracy. Larry Grossman, Progressive Conservative Leader says there is no agenda for the future, only a grab bag ôf 157 promises, most of which are simply a continuation of programs started by previous governments. Promises abound, however, the Liberal's election commitment to increase provincial education transfers to a 60 percent- 40 percent split with local taxpayers was missing. missing. Because of shrinking provincial support local education taxes have jumped-in some cases two to six times the current inflation rate. As well, the Throne Speech was plagued with unclear policy commitments. commitments. Mr. Grossman felt that Mr. Peterson said he wanted to introduce introduce more intellectual rigor into the discussion of freer trade with the United States, yet ignored the issue in his Throne Speech. Instead of using the Throne Speech to chart a new course for Ontario, the Liberals used the occasion occasion to urge the House to support a number of its own bills. Pay equity, pension reform, freedom of information information and privacy laws are still on the agenda for thé upcoming session. session. In conjunction with the promise to increase capital funding to education I am pleased the funds will be forthcoming to both Kedron School in Oshawa and Breehbacnk School in Scugog. . * CAR INSURANCE RATES The Liberal's recent announcement announcement of a 'cap' on automobile insurance insurance rates is no guarantee that rates will not continue to increase. In answer.to a question by Larry Grossman the Minister of Consumer Consumer and Commercial Relations told the Legislature that the proposed proposed review board will allow further increases in such rates. Ontario consumers consumers must not be confused by the Minister's announcement - under the hew system automobile insurance insurance rates will continue to increase increase -- cap or no cap. Such as, on the first day, feeling that each and every question must be asked, we were in a little one room house so we asked the man. "How many rooms in your house:" He quite naturally felt insulted. insulted. In the year 1921 I completed my studies and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts. I then continued for another year during which time I completed the required course for my degree in Theology. This made me eligible for ordination. I was ordained ordained in June 1922 at Grand Bank. The minister in charge of the service was Dr. Dwight Chowan the last General Superintendent of the Methodist Church in Canada. In my years at college and for many years afterwards the financial situation had been a rather serious problem and a source of anxiety. During my college years I earned extra dollars in various ways. For some time I was the official night watchman, my special duty to see that the boys were in by 11:00 p.m. and all the doors were locked. At other times I was a waiter in the dining dining room, looking after two tables of ten each, washing dishes and then getting back to classes on time. The work which suited me most was assistant Librarian, this followed up until my graduation. In all when the story was fully told I'entered the university with the sum of $500.00 and paid my way and at the end had enough to spare to plan for getting married. ■ Corporation of the TOWhl OF NEWCASTLE PUBLIC WORKS WEEK MAY 17 - 23, 1987 PROCLAMATION Whereas the health, safety and comfort of the community community is greatly dependent on the facilities and services provided provided by the Public Works Department; and, Whereas the support of the community is vital in the continuing efficient operation of the Public Works' services, services, such as street maintenance, refuse collection, water and sewer systems, rpad construction and snow removal; and, Whereas the quality and effectiveness of these facilities is dependent on the continued efforts and skills of Public Works Department Staff; Now, therefore, the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Newcastle does hereby proclaim May 17th to May 23rd, 1987, "PUBLIC WORKS WEEK" in the Town of Newcastle, to recognize the efforts of the Public Works Department in providing for health, safety and comfort in the community.
