4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 24, 1988 Orono Tykes win out over Millbrook squad The Tykes were back in action on Saturday against Millbrook. Orono got out to a fast start with Andrew Reid making a good pass to Adam VanDam who scored his first of 3 goals with just 1:30 gone in the first period. Then Millbrook's goalie made many saves holding things close until there was 3:00 left in the first and Steven Foster and, Amy McAllister both scored, opening things up. In the second Andrew Reid got a goal followed by Adam's second. Just before the end of this period Millbrook got their lone goal. Adam finished the scoring with his third in the late stages of the game. Mike Hutton Jr, played another strong game in net. Assists in this game went to Andrew Reid 2, Amy McAllister, Murphy Irvine, Steven Foster, Jeremy Pare, Adam VanDam, Steven Gates and Kevin Copping. Kyle Beacock played a strong defensive game. The Orono team is hurting this week with David Harman sick and Steven Foster leaving in the third period because of sickness. Let's hope everyone is healthy for Saturday's game in Millbrook. OMHA Atoms take 3-2 Bewdley playoff win February 16th saw Orono host Bewdley in a playoff contest. Both teams played scoreless hockey in the first period although Bewdley had the better chances. Orono's goaler Chad Maartense played brilliantly in the first frame as he thwarted several 'close-in' scoring attempts. Orono finally got on the scoreboard at 6:57 of the second period when Jamie Shetler slid a pass to Daryl Reid in the 'slot', Daryl one-timed a shot to the far coriier. Orono went up 2 to 0 two minutes later when centreman Mike Landers broke in from neutral territory, stick handled handled by Bewdley's defense and put a nice move on the goaltender, before tucking it in the corner. Orono seemed to 'sag' a bit in the third period as Bewdley scored 2 quick goals to tie it up. However, with just over 2 minutes remaining in the gàme, defenseman Paul Woods took a shot that Owen Taylor deflected at the net. The goalie made the save, but Daryl Reid was in position to bang in the rebound and give Orono a 3 to 2 win! February 20 saw Orono travel to Sunderland for a one day tournament. tournament. Orono played 3 games and were beat out in the consolation f round. In game 1-, Orono lost 1 to 0 to Manvers. Game 2 saw Orono " come up with a strong offensive effort effort as they defeated Minden 4 to 1. Minden actually jumped into a 1 to 0 lead, but Orono replied with 4 straight goals. Mike Landers scored unassisted at 2:24 of the 2nd period to tie the game at 1. Scoring 3 goals in the 3rd were: Daryl Reid from Jeff Hughes; Jamie Shetler from Aaron Staples and Henry Kaldeway; and Jeff Hughes from Mike Landers and Marc David. In the 3rd and final game Orono seemed seemed to tire as they went down to a 4 - 2 defeat to Little Britain. February 21st saw Ordno visit Little Britain for a playoff game. Orono was missing 4 regular players' from their line-up and had to go with just 10 skaters. Our guys seemed seemed determined to avenge their 4 to 2 loss in tourney play to this very same team the day before. They jumped into an early 1 to 0 lead as right winger Owen Taylor fired a shot that rebounded to left winger Jamie Shetler off the side of the net. Jamie took another shot that was again blocked by Little Britain's goaltender. However, this time centre "Daryl Reid made no mistake as he lifted the loose puck up under the crossbar at 7:42 of the 2nd period. Just over 2 minutes later Jamie and Daryl combined on à "2 on 1" situation. Carrying the puck in over Little Britain's blueline Jamie slid a pass over to Daryl who backhanded a shot into the 'short- side' at 5:45. Daryl and Jamie combined combined again for Orono's 3rd goal as defenseman Paul Woods shot the puck into the corner, where Jamie picked it up and relayed it in front to Daryl and he backhanded it into the bottom corner at 4:33 of the second. second. To this point Orono had played inspired hockey as the defensive defensive pairings of Brian Haines, Jason Lawrence, Paul Woods and Jeff Goodmurphy managed to move the puck well out of their own end. Chad Maartense played "Shut-out" hockey for his part between between the'Pipes'. Early in the third it looked like Orono was going to go up 4 to 0 as centre Mike Landers was sent in on a breakaway by his liriemates Jeff Hughes and Marc David, only to have Little Britain's goalie "Stone" him with a quick glove hand save. This seemed to give Little Britain a 'Big Lift' -as they came back to score two quick |oals to come within one. The host team really pressed with less than a minute left as they went with 6 attackers, but goalér Clayton Rendell "Shut the Door" to give Orono a well deserved deserved and satisfying 3 to 2 victory.
