4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 9,1988 .S' PORT S Orono Tykes edge Newcastle in close event On Saturday, March ,5th the Orono Tykes won another game against our neighbours in Newcastle. Newcastle. Unlike previous games that were high scoring affairs, this one was defensive and ended at 2 - 1. Adam VanDam for Orono and J. Conboy of Newcastle were the goalies and were spectacular making making many key saves. Adam having seen NHL goalies shot the puck out of their own ends decided to play that way himself and was very effective. effective. Mike Hutton Jr., Kyle Beacock, David Harmen and Jeremy Pare played strong on defense, not allowing to many good scoring chances for Newcastle. There was no scoring in the first 34 minutes of the game and looked with only 10 minutes to go no one would score until Steven Foster pestering a Newcastle player stole the puck, moved in close and tucked tucked the puck in the corner of the net. It only took Newcastle 3 minutes to get that back and make it look like it might end in a tie, Andrew Reid took advantage of the hard work of Kyle Beacock and Murphy Irvine to score with just 5 minutes left. This was a well played game and could of gone either way, both teams hustled and played strong hockey. On Sunday March 6th, the Orono Tykes travelled to Manver's Arena to play the home team. The trip back was well worth the effort even though the final score saw Orono down one. Manver's started off strong with a goal within the first 2 minutes of the game. Orono had many good chances provided by Adam Van- Dam, Andrew Reid and Steven Foster. This effort was backed up by an outstanding performance by David Harmon in net. . At 4:14 of the first period SteVen Foster put one between the pipes, assisted by Kyle Beacock. Also playing a strong game were Mike Hutton Jr., Steve Gates, Jeremy Pare, Murphy Irvine and Kevin Copping. Even thdugh Manver's went on to win 2-1 the Orono boys gave it their all. A very close game it could have gone either way. Keep up the good work! Amy Jane McAllister was absent for the game, hope to have her back for the next game. On February 20th, Orono Juicers faced Millbrook no. 1 and lost it 2 - , 1. The only goal came from Wade . Peacock assisted by Danny MacDonald MacDonald and Amanda Haines. On February 29th the Juicer's travelled to Millbrook to face the number II team. All players turned in an excellent game with the Oronô team winning 2 - 0. The first period of the game was scoreless, with end to end rushes, then in the second period Wade Peacock picked up the puck from Danny MacDonald to put Orono on the scoreboard 1 - 0. Danny MacDopald shot from -behind the net and hitting the goalie .putting the puck in the net making the score 2-0. On March 3rd Orono returned once again to Millbrook to face Millbrook I. Orono started very slow, but progressed quickly as the period went on. Chris Mumby opened the. scoring with a shot in- the top corner unassisted. Millbrook came back on a breakaway breakaway putting it past Scott Sawyer. Danny MacDonald put Orono ahead with a long shot inside the blue line putting the puck in the far corner unassisted. Millbrook came back to tie it 2 - 2. In the third period, Orono opened the scoring with a goal by Wade Peacock assist going to Chris Mumby, Orono then scored another goal • by Brian ' Hogenhout assisted by Danny MacDonald MacDonald and Greg Bull. Danny But- tigieg scored the fifth and final goal with 40 seconds left in the game. Scott Sawyer stopped numerous Millbrook shots playing a strong game in net. Then on March 5th Op's came to town for the final league game with the Juicer's winning it 6 - 1. Orono opened the scoring on an unassisted goal by Wade Peacock. Op's came back and scored their only goal unassisted in the firijt period. Second Second period saw Wade Peacock score two more goals with assists going (o Amanda Haines and Adam VanDam. The Orono team scored 3 more goals, goals going to Jeff Gates, Danny Buttigieg and Wade Peacock, assists going to Adam VanDam, Jeff Gates and Wade Peacock. Amanda Haines played her best game t ever,- passing, shooting and' skating hard! Greg Bull also played one of his strongest games this year. The Orono team has a bye in the first round of playoffs waiting for the winners between Millbrook and Ops, as well as Millbrook and Manvers, then these teams will go into a Round Robin for the championship. The Juicer's havfe worked hard all year and we all hope they put their hockey skills to good use in the up coming finals. Good Tuck! Kinsmen PeeWees play in Manvers toumie Weather is playing havoc with the playoff schedule for the Orono Kinsmen Peewees as Oakwood was unable to come to Orono for their scheduled game on Friday, February 12th, now to be played on March 12th. On Saturday, February 13th, the Orono Peewees aitended a tournarnenl at Manvers. The first game was against "Emiel's" from Port Perry and it was a fast start for the day. Orono opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the game, at 9:37, when Bran-' don Ovenden got the puck in the Porj Perry end and skated behind the,net. He passed the puck out to tli£ slot where Scott Hentig got a quick shot over the goalie's arm. The same line st' UL 'k a sain at 9:18 when Jason Hans™ Passed to Scott Hentig at centre i ce t0 start a three on two break. Sc'It P assed to Brandon Brandon Ovenden who carried the puck over the blue line and fired a shot through the goalie's skates. A line change and 27 seconds later, Orono struck again. This time, Scott Hart- wig fired a long pass up-ice to Jason Mercer who was able to poke the puck under the goalie as he tried to cover the puck. The action settled into a steady game until Brandon Ovenden stole thepuck from a Port Perry player as he tried to skate out of his zone. Brandon stickhandled around the lone defender back and rifled a low shot through the goalie's pads at the 4:51 mark. Port Perry closed the scoring in the first period and got the first goal of the second before Orono got rolling again. At 4:26, Brandon Ovenden got the puck at the blue line and dumped it to Jason Hansen who stickhandled to the front of the net and lifted a high shot into the top corner. John Buttigieg started a breakout with a pass to Jason Mercer in the centre zone, jason got the puck to Stephen Shetler whose first shot was blocked but Stephen was able to recover and tip in the rebound rebound at 3:41. Once again, Port Perry closed the scoring for the period and started the next period's count and again Orono countered with their own goals. At the KOI , mark, Sean McKenzie got the puck up-ice to Jason Hansen. Jason was tripped up after crossing the blue line but managed to slash at thàL: puck as he was falling and this flipped flipped the puck over the surprised goalie.
