Carke Museum requests larger annual grant A reguest to reconsider a recommended recommended grant to the Clarke Museum and Archives to council on Monday has been referred to the 1988 budget deliberations later this month. Derek Barnett, chairman of the local museum board pointed out that the Newcastle Community Service Service Advisory Board had recommended recommended a grant in the amount of $27,000 which was somewhat lower than the grant request from the Museum Board of $33,865. Barnett said their cost of operation was uncontrollable uncontrollable and that the requested amount was needed to continue operation. Mark Jackman, curator for the Clarke Museum, also spoke to council, outlining the 1987 program and pointing to increased interest in events held at the museum over the period. He pointed out that in some instances attendance had increased by as much as seventy-seven per- ■ cent. Jackman also said it was the intention intention of the Museum Board to form a Friends of the Museum committee committee to assist in raising $10,000 annually to be used for the operation operation of the museum in the community. community. He said that museums were a business and that it was not expected expected that all funding must come from the municipality. Through questioning by Counc. Hamre, Jackman outlined his activities activities with provincial organizations organizations relating to museum operations where he acts as advisor and consultant. consultant. by Janet Crowther Budget preparations for Newcastle Newcastle and Northumberland Board of Education have been halted for almost a month as a result of a delay in the board grant approvals from the province. Board trustees have reviewed the board's base budget and spending proposals for the 1988 year but no moves can be made until trustees have the knowledge of how much revenue will be obtained from the province. In a closed meeting March 8, trustees told board administrative administrative staff to make recommendations recommendations that would keep this year's budget increase to no more than 5%. One cause for the grant approvals delay is that the province has been re-evaluating its policy involving the amount of property taxes, the individual individual municipalities collect, must go to local school hoards Tn relin- quish an overload of municipal claims of excessive education levies, the province is considering categorizing certain school boards as richer than others. The richer boards will receive less in provincial grants. Taxpayers of the "richer boards" will be forced to pay a larger amount of their school board's budget. The "rich" and "not-so-rich"boards have not yet been categorized. The board will hold a meeting in April with Newcastle and Northumberland Northumberland municipalities to describe the situation and how the board plans to deal with the education education payments municipalities must make to the board. Once the grant approvals are received, the trustees will be asked to bring recommendations on keeping keeping the budget increases under 5%, to the next trustee meeting on April 12.
