4-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 23,1988 SPORTS Orono Atoms enter final Consolation round March 7th, saw Orono visit Oshawa Black Hawks in exhibition play and skated away 4 to 3 victors! Orono opened the scoring at 3:04 of the 2nd period, when Daryl Reid took a Jeff Goodmurphy pass and found the top corner for a 1 to 0 lead. Defenseman Scott Ransberry was credited with the other assist. The Hawks tied it up with just 46 seconds remaining in the period however, Orono came storming back 10 seconds later when Daryl Reid scored his 2nd goal assisted by Jeff Hughes and Marc David to regain the lead. Orono added 2 more in the third period as Jeff Goodmurphy found . the mark at 8:21 assisted by Paul Woods and Jason Lawrence. The Hawks scored 2 goals of their own, but weren't able to tie it up as Orono played tight defensive hockey to gain the victory. March 19th, saw Orono enter tournament play in Manvers and advance to the Consolation Championship Championship Round. Orono's first game was a 5 to 0 loss to Bowman- ville Tyros. The Toros were a much stronger and disciplined club and if not for sparkling performances by both Chad Maartense and Clayton Rendell between the pipes for Orono, the score could have been a lot worse! The second game saw Orono pitted against a Baltimore entry. Orono found their skating legs as well as their scoring abilities as they overpowered Baltimore to the tune of a 10 to 3 victory! Scoring highlights were as follows: Mike Landers - 4 goals, 1 assist; Jamie Shetler - 1 goal, 2 assists; Scott MacDonald - 2 goals, 1 assist; Jonathan Burnham - 2 assists; Sommer West - 1 goal, 1 assist; Jeff Goodmurphy - 1 goal, 1 assist; Paul Woods - 2 assists; Jeff Hughes - 1 goal; and defenseman Owen Taylor -1 assist. A solid team effort all the way around! Honourable mention goes to both Owen Taylor and Jason Lawrence On defense as they played well on the blueline. The third and final game pitted Orono against Manvers for the consolation consolation trophy. Orono jumped into an early 2 to 0 lead as Jeff Goodmurphy Goodmurphy scored from Sommer West and defenseman Jamie Shetler at 9:25. Jamie actually created the scoring chance as he "pinches" along the boards and took a quick wrist shot at the Manvers goalie resulting in a rebound that the Orono forwards pounced on. Mike Landers banged in Orono's second goal at 2:58 of the first period with assists goii)g to Jonathan Burnham and Scott MacDonald. Manvers tied it at 2 midway through the 2nd frame, but Orono replied with 2 more goals of their own as Mike Lanaers scored unassisted on an end to end rush and then with only 10 seconds remaining defenseman Jamié Shetler took the puck at centre centre ice, 'beat 2 defenders and deposited the shot in the net unassisted. Manvers was not to be denied however, as they scored 3 straight goals (including the overtime overtime winner) in the final frame to take the consolation prize. Mike Landers was presented with the MVP award for Orono. Congratulations Congratulations Mike - good effort! Also another fine effort was put in by defenseman Owen Taylor as he was a 'plus one' and no goal against while on the ice! Good effort Owen! Kinsmen PeeWees tie Ennismore in playoff On March 1st, Orono was at home to Ennismore for their first meeting in the playoffs. Orono started quickly with a goal at 9:37 of the first period when Greg ! Hooper tapped in the rebound after Dan Walters had carried the puck into the Ennismore end and fired a low shot. Just over<a minute later, Orono went up by two goals. Dan Walters took a face-off in the En- nismpre end and got the puck to Greg Hooper. In the second period, the teams traded goals.with Ennismore first and Orond scoring,with l:4l left. On this play, CamCron Tomkins dug the puck out of the corner and centred to the slot where Stephen Shelter's quick shot beat the goalie. The third period was the most hectic of the game. Ennismore came back with two quick goals to tie the game before Orono got on track and got two of their own. Orono's fourth goal came when Stephen Shetler got clear on a breakaway and deked the goalie at 8:31. Orono's fifth goal was scored by Scott Hentig when he got hold of a rebound of a shot fired by Mike Schoep at the 5:34 mark. At this time, Orono tried to put on a defensive defensive effort but a lapse of only 44 seconds gave Ennismore time to score two more to tie the score. The last four minutes of the game saw frantic efforts by both teams but the scoring was over for the night. The final score of the game was Orono 5 and Ennismore 5. It was good effort, boys, keep the team spirit going. On March 4th, Orono Kinsmen Peewees travelled to Bobcaygeon for the first meeting with this team from the other half of the league.
