Jason Mercer scored the second goal when he beat the defense and, as he crossed in Iront of the net, tiled a low backhand shot through the legs of the goalie at 5:29. At 3:52, John Batiigteg • trapped the puck at the blue line and relayed to Jason Hansen who scored with a low shot. Jason scored again at 3:21 after Brandon Ovenden dropped a pass to John Buttigieg at the point* Jason was right in front bf the crease and was able to deflect John's shot for Orono's fourth goal. Bobcaygeon broke the shutout at 2:37 but the period was not over yet! Orono scored exactly one minute later when John Bul- tigieg again got the puck at the blue line but his time stickhandled into the slot and fired a quick backhand into the net. With 55 seconds left, Orono struck again as Sean McKenzie McKenzie fired a low drive from the point that Greg Hooper deflected into the net. As the 22 second mark, Orono closed the first period, scoring when Jason Mercer passed from behind the Bobcaygeon net to the slot where Stephen Shetler snapped a shot into the open side of the net. In the second period, the pace was slower although both teams tried hard and good defensive plays were made both Ways. Finally, Bobcaygeon Bobcaygeon scored with just 40 seconds left, but Orono came right back and with 16 seconds remaining, John BuUigieg'% shot from the point was deflected by Jason Mercer but it was blocked by the goalie, but Greg Hooper was on hand to fire in the rebound. The third period was even closer fought with the only goal coming late at the 2:25 mark. On this play, John Buttigieg got loose on a short-handed rush and tried to cut in front of the Bobcaygeon Bobcaygeon net. His shot from a sharp angle was blocked but Stephen Shetler was in position to take the rebound and' score into the open comer to end the scoring for the game. Final score was Orono 9 and Bobcaygeon 2. Although not mentioned mentioned in the scoring, Scott Hart wig on defense and Scot! Henlig, Cameron Tomkins, Mike Sehoep and Adam' Wallace on forward, contributed great effort to the team victory. As well, ■ Scott Hall and Chad Bilk were greatly responsible for the lack of scoring by the Bobcaygeon Bobcaygeon team, robbing them on several good chances. Keep it going, boys, you're doing great! The return match with Bobcaygeon Bobcaygeon took place in Orono on Saturday, March 5th. It looked like a case of overconfidence on the Orono part as the memory of the last night 9 to 2 win was too fresh in the boys minds. Bobcaygeon took over quickly with two goals in the first half the first period before Orono got going. Finally, at 3:55 of the first period Orono got on the board. Greg Hooper got a good shot from the point that was kicked out but Cameron Tomkins was able to grab the rebound, spin and fire a shot through the goalie's "legs. This seemed to get Orono fired up as the boys put on pressure and it payed off. Greg Hooper cleared the puck out'of the Orono end and Jason Mercer outraced the defenders to the puck. He carreid it into the Bobcaygeon pnd and lifted a high shot over the goalie's shoulder with just 8 seconds left in the period. The second period was a hard fought frame with Bobcaygeon again taking taking the lead with the only goal at the 4:49 mark. Orono played hard to get the equalizer throughout the third period, with many close chances. With the time running out, the goalie was pulled for an extra attacker. Finally, the puck was carried carried into the Bobcaygeon end and Stephen Shetler had his shot on net out but Dan Walters got the rebound and fired it over the goalie to tie the game with 8 seconds left and end the game. Final score Orono 3 and Bobcaygeon 3. This being Mark 1 !' Break- which means having the kids hanging around the house. we decided to enter the kids in a tournament, held in Ennismore, to keep them out of trouble. The first game was played on Tuesday with two more following following on Wednesday. Orono got off to a fast start with a 8-2 victory over Lindsay. This was a well played game by Orono, lots of passing, fast skating and checking. The passing passing is very evident in the fact that every player has at least 1 assist. The checking shows in the score, we never allowed Lindsay . to keep close. The scoring was provided by Andrew Reid 2 goals, 2 assists; Adam Van Dam 2 goals, 2 assists; Danny MacDonald 3 goals, 1 assist ; Jeremy Pare with his first of the' year to go with his 2 assists. Further assists go to Murphy Irvine 3, Kevin Copping 3 and single assists to Mike Hutton Jr., Steven Foster, Steven Gates, David Harman, Kyle Seacock and Amy McAllister played excellent in the Orono net. Our next game was against the host Ennismore "A" team. Unfortunately Unfortunately Orono was slow off the mark and suffered a 9-5 loss. David Harman tried his best to stop the Ennismore attack, but there werè too many shots for him to handle himself. Adam. VanDam scored the first goal unassisted but Ennismore took control after that with 4 unanswered goals. Adam got another goal assisted by Amy McAllister and Mike Hutton Jr. Ennismore then got 4 more goals which saddened the Orono players. The coaches then told the kids not to think about the score, just do the best they could each shift. This seemed to work because Orono scored 3 of the last 4 goals all with less than 6:00 left in the game. The kid's spirits were much brighter with this strong finish. Adam Van- Dam scored 2 of these goals making it 4 in the game and Danny MacDonald MacDonald got the other. Assists go to Steven Gales with 2 and Kyle Beacock had 1. Orono then met Ennismore "B" for the "B" Championship, we took our strong finish into this gamè and fought goal for goal in this well played, fast moving game. Orono got the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth and tenth goals.' Ennismore Ennismore got the second, fourth, sixth, eighth and eleventh goals. Final score was Orono 6 Ennismore 5. The tournament was a good event which everyone enjoyed with a small , let down during the second ■ game. Orono has a great bunch of kids that we're all proud of. Thanks go to the MacDonald family for making room in their busy schedule to allow Danny to play with us. The Orono Tyke's would also like to say good luck to the Orono 'Juicer's' Novice teàm in their playoff series. We hope they have as much fun and success as we've had this year. game. 5-5. After allowing Newcastle a 2-0 lead our team rapped hon|e: four unanswered goals, two each from high flying Jim Partner and Chris Yeo. After Newcastle narrowed narrowed the gap to 4-3, Scott McAllister took a nice pass from newcomer, super - Atom Daryl Reid, and seemed seemed to put the game away, Once again, however, the team, allowed two unanswered goals this time in the last two minutes and Orono lost its first point of the playoffs. In fact, Newcastle tied the game with only 14 seconds remaining on a dazzling play by Jason Rogers. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, these lapses are becoming becoming all too common..
