Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 30, 1988-9 Clarke Museum to re-open this Saturday John Stone, known as Mr. Co-op locally, and last year recognized as the "Co-operator of the Year" by United Co-operators of Ontario was presented with Gold Watch by U.C.O. at the 40th anniversary of the local Co-op. The presentation was made by Dave Marquis, U.C.O Director for Zone Five. During the presentation forty years of service to the co-çperative and the area was noted by a number of speakers as well as the dedication to the movement by John Stoné. After a very busy winter of painting, upgrading and alterations to the gallery (brand new exhibit showcases, courtesy of the carpentry carpentry students of Durham College); the Museum is again ready to welcome Visitors both young and old. The seasons first three exhibits are: Fashions for the '80's, everything the well dressed .lady would need, Fire and Forge, Blacksmithing and blacksmiths of Clarke Township and,. ■ On special loan from the Royal Ontario Museum, Eremotherium, The Giant Ground Sloth. Don't miss this (now extinct) mammal's display from the department of Vetebrate Paleontology. Saturday, April 23, 1988 from 2-5 p.m, the Museum will be hosting a special Open House Reception to launch the season. Everyone is invited invited to come Out and see what's new for tins year. Refreshments and entertainment ( is provided. The special guest speaker will be Mr. David C. Newlands, Executive Director of the Ontario Museum Association. The Durham Farmers' County Co-operative, during the year 1987 improved their net savings position before patronage returns from 1.8 percent of total sales in 1986 to 2.5 percent of total sales. The financial report along with developments of the Co-op were presented at the annual itieeting held in the Orono arena on Thursday Thursday evening with over 260 in attendance. attendance. Total sales for the Co-op reached $2,695,019 in 1987 compared to $2,573,308 in 1986. Net saving for 1987 reached $66,670. It was pointed out that seventy- five percent of the business was member business and that the Coop Coop has proved to be strong and hedlthy. It was also pointed out that the Co-op had in 1987 started in oil and gas delivery and that this portion of the business is growing steadily. , Lloyd Ayre, Ralph Greenwood and Don Welsh, 'retiring directors were returned for another term. Other directors include Brian Caswell, John Berry, Glenn Stapleton, John Stone and Gordon Barrie, president. Bill Tamblyn was added to the board of directory due to the resignation of Pier Sikma. The meeting approved the deferral deferral of 1986 'patronage return payments in an amount of $71,000 and> as well approved a two percent patronage return on 1987 business to be paid sometime in the future. John Stone has been a valued member of the Co-operative for some 40 years and a true believer in the Co-operative movement. Fran Rickard, manager of the Co-op, stated he is known in the Orono area as "Mr. Co-op.". Recycling Centre nominations accepted Nominations are now being accepted accepted for position to the Board of Directors of the Durham Recycling Centre Inc. Concerned and interested citizens across Durham Region are invited to present names of individuals willing willing to stand for election. Election of officers will take place at the Annual Meeting of Durham Recycling, Wednesday, April' 13th at 7:30 p.m. at the new recycling facility at 4600 Garrard Road North.
