Murphy Irvine, David Harman and : -- : i Orono Kinsmen team in Port Perry tournie The Orono Kinsmen Peewees travelled to Port Perry on Wednesday, Wednesday, March 16th to play in a tournament. tournament. The first game was against" Port Perry's 'Big V'. The Orono team started, on the right track with a goal in the first minute.of the game. Dan Walters passed to Greg Hooper at Orono's blue line and Greg carried the puck into the Port Perry end and relayed to Stephen Shetler. Stephen cut in front of the Port Perry net and lifted a high shot into the top corner at 9:f8. The game settled into an end-to-end type action, with lots of chances at both ends, but it was Orono that scored again. At the 8:32 mark of the second period, Mike Schoep got the puck out of Orono's end and passed to Jason Mercer at the Port Perry blue line. Jason stickhandled past the defense, deked the goalie and fired the puck into the near corner corner of the net for a two goal lead. Unfortunately, the boys seemed to have lost some concentration after losing out in their playoffs and Port Perry was able to come back to tie the game before the second period was over. The third period was a two-way struggle to go ahead and Port Perry got their third goal with 4:38 left. The Orojio boys tried to regain their balance arid pressed hard but to no avail. With this -goalie pulled for the extra attacker and the face-off in the Port Perry end, Port Perry managed to gain control of the puck and, firing from their side of centre ice, got their insurance insurance goal with just 26 seconds left to end the scoring. Final score was Port Perry 'Big V" 4 and Orono 2. * The second game of the day was against the St. Alphonsus team from Peterborough. Again, Orono started off well when, for the second second time .in one day and the twelfth time in the year, they scored a goal in the first minute of play. On this play, the puck was kicked out of the Orono zone to Jason Mercer. Jason raced up the ice and passed to Stephen Shetler who deked deked the goalie and scored in the open net at 9:14. From this point on, the tension got worse as both teams, skated, passed and tried to score, but the defense and goaltenders efforts efforts on both sides slopped all at tempts until late in the game. With just 2:51 left in the third period, St. Alphonsus managed to break the Orono shutout and tie the game. The possibility of sudden death overtime must have stirred the Orono boys to extra efforts and they came back in fine form just over a minute later. Greg Hooper carried the puck out of Orono's end and over the St. Alphonsus blue line. Sidestepping a , fallen defenseman, Greg laid "a. perfect pass across to Stephen Shetler in the slot and Stephen rang the winning goal in off the goalpost. Final score of the game was Ororio 2 and St. Alphonsus 1. Under the scoring scheme for the tournament, Orono, with its two* points and a goal difference of 1, was out of the final round but the boys certainly gave a good account of themselves. Best effort awards went to Stephen Shetler in the first game and to Jason Mercer in the second. second. Scott Hall and Chad Puk played at their usual good form to keep Orono in contention during the games. The defense and forwards forwards mentioned in the scoring plays, as well as John Buttigieg, Scott Hartwig, Sean McKenzie, Scott Hentig, Adam Wallace and Cameron Tomkins, all played well and, with a few better bounces of the puck, the team could have gone to the top. Better luck next time, boys. With time running out in the season, the Orono Kinsmen Peewees took on some new opponents opponents with a game against a team from Port Hope on Friday, March 18th. In keeping with the Port Hope teams' normal play style, to help prepare some of the older boys for next year and by the boy's request, this was to be a body-contact game. The game was a fast-paced one from the start, with several chances at both ends but it was Orono that opened the scoring at 4:31 of the first period. On this play, Greg Hooper carried the puck to the Port Hope blue line and passed to Stephen Shetler who deked the goalie and scored with a backhand shot to the open corner. Port Hope tied the score in the second period at 6:54 but Orono came back to take the lead at 5:01. Sean McKenzie McKenzie stole the puck from a Port Hope forward at the blue line and passed to Greg Hooper in the Port Hope end.-Greg carried the puck behind the net and centred a pass to' Dan Walters whose ice level shot beat the goalie. The action became even more intense in the third period, - Port Hope tied the game again at 12:37 and both teams worked hard to get the next goal. Orono again took the lead when Greg Hooper stickhandled into the Port Hope end and passed to Dan Walters in the slot. Dan's shot, was deflected wide; but he rebound off the back boards went to Stephen Shetler and his quick shot found the mark. Port Hope tied it again a,t 3:11 and it seemed that the game would end in a tie. Orono again took the lead on a fine single-handed effort when Dan Walters won a face-off, skated across the Port Hope blue line and past the defense, deked the goalit, and backhanded the winning goal into the net with just 1:07 left. Port Hope, tried very hard to come back with another goal, but the solid X defensive aqd backchecking efforts ) of John Buttigieg, Scott "Hartwig, Mike Schoep, Adam. Wallace, Cameron Tomkins, Jason Mercer and Scott Hentig along with the fine goaltending of Chad Puk and Scott Hall held them off for the win. Final score was Orono 4 and Port Hope 3. While this was the first body contact game for the Orono boys, they certainly didn't look out of place, in the contest, and both teams played a clean checking game without the goon-style so often 1 seen. Good team game, boys, keep it up.
