GRAND OPENING April 22nd, 1988 Viewer's Choice VIDEO and TV/ Choice of Over 1000 Movies Free Coffee and Donuts Grass Fires The Fire Department has received inquiries in the past week with regard to people burning off dead grass and weeds. Although it is an easy way to rid oneself of unwanted dead grass after the winter, it should be noted that the Town of Newcastle has a By-law which regulates the setting of fires. The By-law states that no one shall set or cause to be set a fire in the open air without first obtaining a written permit from the Fire Chief. These permits are issued for clearing brush and there are several specific regulations which cover the size and type of fire permitted. Fire permits are not issued, under any circumstances, in urban residential areas of the Municipality. It should be noted that due to the nature of grass fires and the difficulty difficulty in containing and controlling these fires, permits are not issued for the purpose of burning off a field or ditch area. On several-occasions, several-occasions, well meaning persons have set fires to clear a small area and unable to control the fire have caused caused severe damage to property. There have been numerous grass fires in the past two weeks, which indicates that the grass is very dry, allowing for fires to burn out of control. Persons Who set fires in spite of the Town's Burning By-law are risking conviction for breach of the provisions of this By-law and could be subject to a penalty of not less than $50.00 and not more than $300.00 if convicted. The Town of Newcastle Fire 1 Department would discourage anyone thinking about burning their grass ,and asks that residents give serious thought to the consequences,, prior to setting any fires. M.
