f Winner of Fire Prevention Poster Contest 20 artists to show art ^ many events downtown It is being said there is everything in Orono this week-end except à dance taping monster, .To be sure there is plenty of activity with the Downtown Outdoor Art Festival and the Lions Chili Cook-Off and numerous related features with each' event. The Orono Downtown Business Association are sponsoring the Downtown Outdoor Art Festival, demonstrations and sale on Saturday, Saturday, May 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This includes a few over twenty artists from a wide area from Toronof to Udora and to the Peterborough area. The Downtown; event also includes includes childrens' art competitions, children's face painting, roving minstrels and outside cafes. This will be augmented by merchant displays and the offering of specials. It should be a family event.* The festival also includes some Brett Graves, a grade 5 student at the Orono Public School, was the winner of the Town of Newcastle Fire Prevention Poster contest for the boys. The Brett Graves' poster now enters the Region of Durham contest contest which judging takes place today, today, Wednesday. Brett receives a $25.00 award and his namie is to be enscribed on the plaque at the Orono School. There were 140 posters entered in the Town of Newcastle contest. It is interesting to note that last year Aaron Staples of the Orono School was the boy winner of the Town of Newcastle contest. pottery along with wood carving demonstrations and sale and sculpturing display. Artists include: Bill Lishman, Maureen Remington, Don Staples, Diane Brochvogel, Peter Boots,' Sondra Moffat, Elsie Sheridon, An- neke Verbeek, Les Jones, Wayne Deremo, Doug Hall, Bud Hay, Eileen Rackman, Maureen and Keith Killan, Rob Whitelock, John Climenage, Ron Lace, Merle Slute and Ainslee Hendry. It all happens in downtown Orono. In case of rain the show will be held in the Orono Town Hall. The Orono D.B.I.A. is also serving serving an early morning breakfast of sausage and -pancakes at the Chili Cook Off, fairgrounds, both * on Saturday morning and on Sunday Sunday morning. Proceeds from this . feature is to go towards the Woods Walk Park project. The Orono Estates also holds a "community yard sale on Saturday. Laidlaw to seek decision from provincial body According to a recent news report Laidlaw Waste Systems novy intend to take their expansion plans in the south-east corner of the Town of Newcastle to a provincial en vironmental hearings board. This date marks the beginning of Clarke's 25th Anniversary activities. The weekend long reunion will Happenings . ... OPEN GARDEN Everyone welcome to view the gardens of Mr. & Mrs. Dave Hinton, second house west of Leskard Road on Taunton Road. The gardens consist of many plantings of rhododendrons and will , be open from May 29th to Jurte 12th, 10:00 a.m. to dusk. Orono Town Hall Euchre results The high scores for the May 18th party at the Orono Town * Hall are: Aileen Turner 86, Charlie Campbell 85, Bernieee Mulligan 83, Ed Skinner 80, and Jeqn Allin 79. Low score went to Lena Clysdale. Draw winners were: Marion Sears, Aileen Turner, Marg Linton and Marion Sears. The final euchre party for the year is being held Wednes- , day, May 25th. National Environment Week Citizens For A Safe Environment call attention to. the fact that National Environment Week is being recognized from May 30th to June 5th. June 5th is National Environment Day and through a joint effort effort of the Citizens For A Safe Environment and the Committee of Clarke Constituents a clean-up is beig undertaken of the Wilmot Creek at Highway 115 and Highway 2 at 1:30 p.m. Plans are aisé well underway to visit area elementary schools the begin with an open house and registration at Clarke from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The open house will continue continue Saturday morning and the opening ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. on the school football field. Volleyball and soccer games will also be occurring during the day. A buffet dinner and dance will be held at Orono arena on Saturday night and the arena will also be housing a brunch Sunday morning until 12:30. At 1 p.m. at the Orono arena an ecumenical service will be held. The anniversary committee, staff and students at Clarke have also put together a 25th Anniversary Yearbook, Yearbook, which is available to be ordered when registering for the reunion Friday, June 3rd. Invitations for the reunion were sent to everyone who's address was available. If you did not receive an invitation but would like to attend the activities please attend the registration Friday night. Doug Moffatt', a former principal at the Orono Public school and currently currently manager for a parcel delivery company has announced from his R.R. 1 Kendal address that he will be seeking the liberal nomination in the riding, of Durham for the next federal election. He said this may come as a surprise surprise since in the past he had been associated with another political ' party. He said he now had no ties to his former association. He states it is his "belief that the interests of Canadians will be served served best through the policies and people of the Liberal party. He said we cannot continue as "a strong, ? growing and caring nation if we allow Brian Mulroney another term in which to sell or give away our birthright birthright t to his friends and foreign nations.
