Town approve timing for northern fire station The Town of Newcastle council has given approval tq a schedule of events when completed would see a new fire-service in the' northern part of the Town in the spring of 1990. The schedule will identify a site for a northern fire station in 1988 with purchase by -the end of the year. Prior to purchase public meetings and a mail-out questionairre will be held and circulated to determine the availability of part-time volunteers and other related information. Upon being able to man the station with the requirement that it have access to Regional road 57 the purchase would be completed. to 1989 would consider proceeding proceeding with the building design and ordering vehicles. All needs are to arrive in the spring of 1990 when the station would be opçn for service service to the community. The station would expect to be open in May. Counc. Arnot Wotten said he was well pleased with the time schedule as the proposal has been on a back burner all too long. Town asked to be fair, call tenders for garbage collection Paul Groenveid', manager for GDS Disposals, Courtice, asked council to be fair to all gar bilge contractors contractors and gain the best price for the people by calling tenders for garbage pick-up in the Town of Newcastle. Groenveid was referring to the fast that council is calling for negotiations to set the cost of gar bage removal in the Town with the present contract holder, BF1. The present BFI contract carrys on until the end of 1988. Groenveid stated that GDS had been in business for forty years, had 18 modern tr'ucks and employed 30 people with some from'the Town of Newcastle. He also stated that the firm did have contracts with most of, the neighbouring municipalities. He said the Town was bypassing the tendering process for a contract that would be in the neighbourhood of some $5 million. "I have never heard of such a thing and I find it difficult to understand why a" municipality would spend that •amount of money without going to tender", he said. . Groenveid also pointed out that the Town did tender for other expenditures. expenditures. "You are putting us out of the residential garbage business without being given a chance", he said. Groenveid pointed out that they had bid on contracts in Whitby and other centres and recently received a contract from Whitby. The manager also stated that his firm was prepared to provide a transfer station in the Courtice area. "All I ask is that you give GDS a chance to bid on this contract," he said. Counc. McKnight asked if he was satisfied with the five year term of the contract to which Groenveid stated that he thought it was a good time frame for such a contract. He also told Counc. Cowman that they collected garbage in Mitchell Corners Corners for $13.00 a month'.
