Orono "Whites" off to a quick start in '88 The Orono "Whites" Pee wee team is off to a quick start in the 1988 baseball season with a 5-1-1 won-lost-tied record. The team has a lot of speed on the bases, some really strong arms, a not to shabby defense and as the stats show a strong offense. The coaching staff of Mike Hutton Hutton and Pat Woods are very proud Jeff Den Hollander Chris Yeo Tom Tamblyn Daryl Houston Jeff Wilson Steve Shetler Larry Houston Clayton Rendell Paul Woods Wayne Lambert Mike Dreslinksi Brandon Ovenden Paul Dreslinski Justin Hughes of these kids some of whom have showed great promise, others great improvement and others such as Paul D. and Justin who started slowly have done fantastic in the last couple of games. The team is saddened by the news of Tom Tamblyn breaking his arm. He will be surely missed and we hope he has a full aûd quick recovery. A writer I am not, but because of your editorial this taxpayer is going to speak out - we've got to save this beautiful area! My husband, Lawrence and I have been life-long residents of Clarke and Hope Townships, and we care deeply for the farmland around us, the forest and the watershed that make up our urban life. Conservation of ,the agriculture, forest and Watershed were taught through our early school years as a must. A .Sunday School Chorus "Brighten the Corner Corner Where you Are" comes to mind. On the cover of the October, 1986 issue of the United Church Observer, two men are seen dumping^ dumping^ barrel of liquid waste from a truck. The title was "How much can creation forgive?" and it still haunts me! What is man doing to God's Creation? In Columbus, Wednesday, June 8, 1988, I had the pleasure of hearing hearing the Hon. John Eakins, Minister of Municipal Affairs, speak of how hard he is Working to help clean,up the environmental problem in the Niagara area. I wondered - "Who is working for our area?" Why are we having the threat of everyone in the country trying to dump their garbage garbage on the Town of Newcastle? We know we in the urban area do not contribute to the mountain of garbage known as the Laidlaw Site and why should we put up with it? 1 decided there and then that l would speak out loud and clear what 1 expect expect elected people of all levels of government to do for this taxpayer and her family, so they can spend our money wisely for our best interest. interest. Our best interests are: fresh water, fresh air, a protection of the natural forest, agriculiure coçi- munity our family love so much. Our great grandparents and grandparents grandparents settled in Hope and Clarke Townships and their love for this forest and river country make us the strong minded citizens we are. We know what we want and what our creator intends for us to do. I would like to ask Mr. Sam Cureatz, M.P.P. for Durham East what he is doing to stop this garbage garbage from coming into our area? National Environment Day held Sunday at Wilmot Creek, to the best of my knowledge, was the first time I have ever seen Sam at any meeting I have attended concerning the dump issues I am involved with, in the last 12 years. It makes one wonder why? I was reading a report #83-147 to the Planning Department to amend, Durham Regional Official Plan re Regional Reclaimers Limited File #83-8ID to designate lands to permit permit a Waste Disposal operation," and on Page 4-77 in the section "submissions Received by the Town of Newcastle 4.3.2", petitions petitions have been received by the Town of Newcastle with respect to this issue. One Petition, submitted to Mr. S. Cureatz, .M.P.P. of Durham East, indicated support of the Regional Reclaimers Ltd., proposal proposal to expand. It seems to me that the only people who like garbage are the ones who are making money from it. Everyone in this area who talks to me wonder, "How long will it take before our well water will become polluted?" Who is going to test our wells everyday to see if the poison chemicals produced by toxic household garbage leaks into our wells? We love the pure spring water taste and so do people- who normally only have access to city water. Man cannot survive without fresh water! We know there is a garbage crisis but, we the people of the urban area do not feel it should be loaded into a sight "With the lovely Graham Creek flowing right by it and the rocks so covered with algae that neighbourhood children don't swim there like they were used to doing a few years back. The Golden Rule 1 remind you is: "Do LJnlo Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You." We all have to work to reduce the garbage, but putting it near these watersheds is not the answer. We do not want the sickness the StollITville Dump caused caused its neighbours to endure until they finally won the fight to remove their dump. 1 vvondgr where their garbage is going? Garbage goes out but is there someone monitoring closely what comes into ones com- ■ munity. I wonder? Up to now all reports have turned the Laidlaw site down as being environmentally unsafe unsafe for the landfill site. Are we to believe the money spent to make these tests a waste - Are they untrue? untrue? This area is still the same now as it was then. I also wonder - what about the lands Eldorado owns at Port Granby? No dump of any kind should be anywhere near a major body oFwater or watershed - whether it is radioactive waste or municipal waste. The late Mr. A. Carruthers, M-P-P. stated that garbage garbage dumps should not be within a 10 to 20 mile radius of any lake or watershed. I was honoured to have Mr. Carruthers as my Sunday School Superintendant and respected his word. Prime Minister Mulroney also states that no Nuclear Waste Dump should be anywhere near a major body of water. We should listen to our Prime Minister. The Niagara County have had a grave problem and the Hon. John Eakins, Minister of Municipal Afr fairs is working very hard to help them. Who is helping us to keep it out of our area? Our elected members should be as everyone knows that throwing your junk into your neighbours' backyard is against the law! Many of our taxpayers' taxpayers' dollars are being spent to keep Canada the beautiful place it was meant to be. It is not fair for the Town of Newcastle to be the dumping area of everyones garbage just because other areas have a gar- bage crisis and Metro is looking at two sites in the Town of Newcastle. Don't throw your junk in our backyard, our backyards full so to say with one already serious problem problem at the Eldorado Waste Site at Port Granby and the nearly full Laidlaw Site yet another. What can you do as a taxpayer to prevent this? Write or telephone your elected members and attend meetings. We, the people of the Town of Newcastle, must get involved involved and show our politicians we are not going to take all this garbage garbage without a fight! We miist stop this ludicrous idea as, Diane Hamre Regional Councillor states, and put an end to the garbage being brought into the Town of Newcastle, Do your part and recycle by using the recycle blue boxes the Town of Newcastle have supplied. It works. Use bio-gradable garbage bags. I want to thank Mayor John Winters for his stand against garbage garbage being brought here from Metro. I also want to thank Diane Hamre, our Regional Councillor for Ward 3 for her eight long years of tireless effort to try and stop the garbage being put where it now is. Thank you, also Frank Stapleton, Councillor of Ward 3, for the work you have done. Thank you John Veldhuis and the Port Granby Monitoring Committee, citizens who are care about their environment environment and to bring about the closure of the Port Granby Nuclear Waste Site, June 30, 1988. These elected members and citizens cannot do it themselves, so get involved now before it is too late! "A stitch in time saves nine" '- a famous saying my grandmother used to say to me and now I know what she meant by it. It is up to us, the taxpayers, to keep this beautiful countryside the way it deserves to be kept! Thank you Roy for your space in your paper, and for your time to read this resident's views. Sorry it is a bit long but 1 have been saving my opinion for a bit longer than most.. If you can't say something nice one shouldn't say it at all. 1 can't find one good thing to say about 'garbage--You can haw it we don't want it. What move can 1 sav?
