Newtonville Alive by Peggy Mullan School year end activities are really winding up, as the students of every grade in every school prepare for that final bell that will let them out for the summer holidays. Sponsored by the Durham Regional Police Force, this year's Annual Safety Patrollers Jamboree was held on June 14th at the Civic Auditorium in Oshawa. All Safety Patrollers who served their school and fellow students during the '87-'88 school year were honoured with the yearly celebration of awards, music, snacks and dancing. Newtonville's Patrollers who enjoyed enjoyed the evening were: (left to right) Scott Mullan, Chris Green, Ryan Farrow, Steven Green, Matt Strutt, Derek Arnold, Lori-Ann. Pitt and Ken Peleshok. A special Award of Merit plaque was awarded to the Safety Patroller Captain, Steven Green for his years duties and responsibilities he so proudly assumed. Another tradition come June every year, the Track and Field : events throughout all our schools. June 15th was the day..Newton- ' ville's grade 4/5 class had the chance to take part in track activities activities over at Newcastle Public School. Michele Landry. I had the opportunity opportunity to chat again with our own Olympian Marathoner, Silvia Rueg- ger. I am sure you were like me, and wondering how she has been doing. (Silvia ran the Olympic Marathon, • in the Summer Olympics '84, in Los Angeles, placing eighth). Sadly, Silvia was unable to qualify for this year's games in Seoul, Korba. Added back and further further knee injuries have halted her training schedule time and time again over the past several months. However, cheerfully, she is on the running road to recovery now! She is looking forward to getting back to her intense running programme, programme, even though she has been able to keep up sortie conditioning with biking and swimming.' Little Scoops - Last Saturday morning, June 18th, about 25 ladies enjoyed a super trip to the Dixie Mall in Mississauga, and thank organizers for making it possible. It was noted that this particular spot was very bright and airy, had many washrooms and rest areas with benches. benches. June 12, 1971 was the date of the very first auction at the Grist Mill here in town. Fond, fond memories, I'm sure will be kindled. Lloyd Clysdale, late husband of our Lena Clysdale was on hand as the auctioneer and is dearly remembered as setting the stage for future Auctioneering Champion, Frank Stapleton. The coffee was lovely, but the company was super! Lena Clysdale has lived in this area all her life. She is one of the most charming, warm ladies I have had the pleasure of knowing since moving to Newtonville. Visiting with Lena the other day, she informed me of an active group she is involved with, the "Sunshine Committee." This committee of Newtonville ladies is responsible for visiting or sending cards and flowers to those in the hospital, various other cheery deeds, as well as handling some wedding or party, catering. What a nice idea.. Keep up the wonderful job, "Sunshine Ladies," Olive Hendersen, Mary Vinkle, Shirley Stapleton, Dorothy Stapleton and Lena Clysdale. - The Region has officially purchased purchased pne acre of land to be used for the Newtonville Water Tower. Its location will be on the West side of Newtonville Road,, just north of Brown's new blue barn. Pipeline construction is to begin this summer sometime. - The Pines Senior Public School will be holding its grade eight graduation ceremones at Clarke High School, Monday, June 27th. The students are expected to congregate congregate at 6:30 p.m. Following the auditorium ceremony, the graduation graduation dance will being at the Pines. Congratulations to all! - The last day of school at Newtonville Newtonville Public School is Tuesday, June 28th. There- will be a special assembly at 9:00 a.m., with guests in attendance from the UCW to present merit awards. "Play Day" is scheduled for Friday 24th, rain date 27th.
